Slacking on protective styles to please people!

Who can relate to this... we see a protective style success story and promise you will wear your hair up till the day you die! Then as soon as you go to work, church or where ever and get a crazy look or comment you are off to the salon or to your home to apply heat and wear it down.. ALL TO PLEASE PEOPLE... Can anyone relate to this? Has anyone overcame this and has the hair to prove it? Help! I am stuck at right above brastrap and really want mbl or waist....

I can kinda relate, but mine is self imposed I get tired of my hair being up. BUT, I have been trying to be creative and do different protective styles so I don't get bored with the look. I believe that there's atleast 1 cute protective style that you can do for every occasion.

I remember when my hair was starting to grow out from a butcher job that this guy did to it, and one of my friends was so happy to see it longer that she said I should always wear my hair down. So I wore my hair down a lot, which caused me to want to comb it all of the time to keep it tame-looking, which led to excessive breakage. Never again will I let that happen, no matter how good I look with my hair down!

The only time I compromised was on a date and I took my hair down from being pinned up, BUT I still wore my hair bantu knot style. So, it was at least a low manipulation style

I had an incident the other day at my local bank. The teller is really cool and fairly sweet. I came up to cash a check. I was wearing my hair pulled back in a bun. She says to me, "You look so plain with your hair put up." I looked at her, smiled and said, "You know, I hear mixed things. Some people love it because it highlights my face and looks sophisticated. Others like me better with my hair down. But the bottomline is that it's MY hair, so I will wear it so that it pleases ME."

She quickly looked down, cashed my check, handed me my money and gave me a nervous smile and wave good bye.

Thanks to protective styling, my hair is FINALLY retaining length (at least, I think it is ) and it is definitely thicker than it was when I was first lurking on LHCF.

Well, I don't really have anyone say much to me about my hair. Of course, I have no obnoxious family where I live. The only person I try to please is my SO and he really says very little about my hair. I happen to know he likes roller sets a lot though because he always grins when I have a fresh roller set done.

That is hard to keep up with though because I work out 5 days a week and 45 minutes of cardio in the morning will sweat it out in no time.

My SO thinks me working out is more important and he's willng to sacrifice "good hair days" for a tight butt and abs. LOL. I do my hair on Saturday to look nice for our evenings out.

Luckily, he knows my goals and I have been bunning like crazy and I'm happy to report he is very supportive although he expects to see some hair down my back come spring.

I wear my hair down one night a week after I've roller set - date night for Dh and I. Otherwise, there is castor.camellia oil on the ends, and it's up in a clip or claw or something- it's always up. The only who matters is Dh, and he supports the goal.

i'm this way: some people have NEVER seen my hair down: and after my hair passed SL by 2 inches: i got careless and always wore my hair out or tied it up imporperly: ends become cringly and broke off: now my front is way healthier and longer then my back: so now either way: i can't wear my hair out cuz my back is a lil jacked up at the moment

I guess I'm too self absorbed to care very much. My hair is not for other people's entertainment. Some people have never seen it down (straightened). I don't even know why others feel the need to comment. Especially since most of the people commenting have busted hair or hair they can't care for themselves.

I wore protective styles for about 6 months, while I may have gained a little thickness. I can't really see a big difference. The sides of my head began to ache no matter how loose I had the bun so I stopped.

Cathy Howse says she does not bun and her hair still grew.

I can definitely relate. I'm natural and my boyfriend (and it seems like everyone else is obsessed with my curly braidouts). My boyfriend also haid braids and cornrows so I have been wearing my hair out for months...two days ago I got the nerve to finally put some individuals in.

I will admit that I am afriad about what his reaction will be when I go to visit him for Thanksgiving. Not that he wouldn't be nice, but you know how you want your man to think your pretty.

I always get comments from certain people I know saying "Do you always have to wear your hair up like that" or "Why don't you ever 'do' your hair?"

Like a french twist is not doing my hair? Since when was an elaborate updo not doing my hair?erplexed But I guess in their world "down and pressed" is the only way. And of course these are the same women who want to sit there and complain that they can't seem to grow their hair any longer.

The only person's opinion of my hair outside of mine that matters is my husband's, everyone else can go kiss my butt.

Before I started my journey my hair was too short to pin up because I did a BC. Now that I have some more length and gaining more thickness, it's too hot to wear out so I always have it bunned, rolled or loose braided so I never really slack on protective styling. I must have worn my hair down about 3-4 times in the last 4 months and this is despite annoying people asking everyday, "how long is your hair?", "why do you always have it pinned up or bunned?". Uhmmm...last time I checked, it's mineerplexed.

Why bow to pressure to please others now, when you can wow them later?

Why are you trying to please other people? I just don't get the idea of a need to do that. It's not their hair or their goal. And I find it rude of others to tell someone how to look, dress, etc.

Just smile and say........"The best is yet to come".

There is one nurse at my job, whenever I wear my hair straight she makes it a point to oooh and ahhh over my hair. And she ALWAYS tells me that "You should wear your hair like this EVERY day".....and...."See, with your hair like that you look so PROFESSIONAL."

She just goes on and on about how I should wear my hair, and how much better it looks straight, and blah blah blah

On a day where I don't just give a half smile to her and keep it moving, I just tell her the truth-which is I currently don't have the desire or the time to spend trying to maintain a straight style on this thick head of natural hair of mine. ESPECIALLY considering that I work out, which makes it even more unrealistic for me to have salon-straight AND healthy, long hair EVERY day.

And that's BESIDES the fact that the obvious reason I don't wear my hair the way YOU want me to is simply because it's MY hair. Period.

Its so funny to hear these stories, because hardly anyone ever compliments me on my hair UNLESS it's up! Its just below SL and looks kinda plain worn straight, but when I do a rollerset and pin it up in a high, curly bun, people are like WOW!!!

I went to party with my hair like this and some cute earrings on, and I actually had a classmate tell me I should wear my hair up ALL THE TIME...and I think he was flirting!

I planned on wearing my hair up all year anyway, and now I have extra incentive!

Sounds like my SO. Super supportive but he expect results. And as long as I keep my face pretty and my body tight and petite, he is just waiting for the hair to kick in. He hates weaves. He compliments it whenever I do decide to wear it down. He compliments how long, thick, and lush it looks. I love him.
