So I'm sitting here in a cosmetology school about to get...

So I'm about to get a roller set(I figure for $5 you can't go wrong). I washed and dc'ed last night so they're just rinsing and rolling. But what,if anything, would you ABSOLUTELY not get done at a beauty school(Aveda doesn't count). This girl is in front of me getting a relaxer by an obvious novice(she didn't know where to start application and I don't know if she based the scalp), and I'm scared for her. So anyway, back to the question- What wouldn't you get done at a beauty school?

I have had my share of bad experiences at beauty school and believe it or not they messed up my ROLLER SET...but I would never let them color, or cut my hair.

I definitely wouldn't be getting a relaxer. I don't even trust "experienced" people at salons to do that.

When I was preg. I was at the beauty school every week getting a wash and wrap on my short hair. I did have the supervisor cut over my ear since it was growing out. My hair always turned out nice.:yep:

I would never, ever get a chemical there though.:nono:

During graduate school, I went to a cosmetology school many, many times, and I would only get a roller set. No relaxer, no trims, no coloring, etc. I'd be too afraid.

Me either. They are in here overlapping the heck out of peoples hair. Plus I've been waiting for the last 35 minutes to get my hair started(20 past my appointment time).

I agree. The last one I went to was Aveda where I got my hair cornrowed back. It was took 40 minutes for ole girl to figure out what to do. I specifically asked for someone who dealt with black hair before. I guess they didn't understand. My mom got a rollerset and shape. That came out messed up.

A relaxer or any chemical service.:nono:

I have gotten chemical services at a cosmetology school before (I knew the person). I don't get nail services besides the basic $5 and I only do facials if they are free.

A few years ago, I used to stay in the beauty school getting a rollerset...I never let them do any chemicals though.

I need to start doing that again...my hair grew so good.

I got my hair cut in a cute ear length bob at an Aveda school and the girl did a great job.

That's probably the farthest I would go. No chemical services at all.

typically I would not do a chemical service - but I did get a relaxer from a lady who was going to school to get her cert, but was already familiar with hair styling and care, so I wasn't worried.

I used to go to get my hair braided when I was in HS - I didn't wear extensions and it was soooo cheap. I miss it :ohwell:

Re: So I'm sitting here in a cosmetology school and I cried

O.k. so the ordeal is over and I spent a total of four hours in the school. I made an appt. but didn't know anybody there by name so I didn't ask for anybody. Anyway they make this barber(a guy) do my hair. He was super gentle with the comb out but other than that he had NO experience with doing rollersets and I just thought that since it was a school they would have someone watching him more closely like they did with the girls doing relaxers for the 1st time. Well I was wrong and this man spent 2 hours TRYING to rollerset my hair and I was close to tears as I had only had 3 hours of sleep within the last 48 hours. The instructor kept walking by and telling him he was doing a good job, but I could feel that it wasn't right. So he finally finishes and all the rollers he put in by himself are falling out and have chunks of hair not even rolled-forget whether or not the set was tight. I don't know if it was the screaming toddler next to me, the fatigue, or the fact that my scalp was sore from letting him pull on it but I cried. I felt so bad for him but I couldn't help it...ladies it was purely ridiculous. Another student had to come and take out all of my rollers and redo them and it took so long that all the rollers in the front were completely dry by the time the other student started. Now I feel bad-I knida wanna bring him some cookies or something. I just felt that even though it was a school he should have been given better supervision. so I guess I'll be ordering that rollersetting dvd.

Wow!!! Not only should YOU not feel bad but he needs to get his tuition fee BACK!!! They are obviously NOT teaching him simple things.

I have had great luck with beauty schools. I have had some of the best haircuts from there. The way i figure it they are usually extra careful because they are being graded, but that doesnt apply everywhere i guess. I have been thinking about getting my color done there next time.

Just wash and a set only, twists, braids, etc....

Absolutely no chemicals, no scissors, and no heat.
If the student was graduating tomorrow than I would "consider" a flat iron, other than that....:nono:

I frequent a beauty school in my area. I guess it depends on the individual because There are some students that are really good and some who are completely clueless.

The person who did my hair last week was a mess. I went in there to get all of the damaged ends cut off of my hair so basically I went from neck length to an ear length bob. I wanted a cut and a wrap. She did a really good job on the cut and the instructor was watching really closely over and helping her through the cut so that wasnt bad at all but then here comes the stupidity.

My hair was practically dry by the time she finished cutting it so she goes:
Her: Do you want me to wrap it?
Me: Yes :yep:
Her: Are you going to get under the dryer?
Me: :ohwell: Uh, yes
Her : ( sitting there with a big bag of Motions products at her station) Should I put something on it first?
Me: ( pointing at the bag and trying not to make her feel stupid) Maybe some foam:perplexed

Anyway she puts some foam in and proceeds to try to wrap my half way dry hair and the complains when she cant get it to wrap right. She says its because my hair is too short for a wrap:wallbash:. No you darn fool, maybe you should have rewet it first.

After about five minutes I ask her to just blowdry it and my hair hates blow dryers. I just gets all poofy. So when shes done my hair is all poofy and she asks if I want her to flat iron it. Of course I do crazy woman.
Ok now heres the kicker. She proceeds to try to flat iron my hair with nothing on it at all. I had to tell her to put something on my b4 she flatironed.

This happened to me many years ago. I don't know why they let the barbers roller set. Come on. I cried in the car though. I think I was 15 and they had my hair like my 75 year old grandma. I washed my hair when I got home.

I am sorry to say this is why the beaticians coming out of beauty schools do not know what they are doing, and the students don't let other practice on each other. I think the schools should other free service to the public.

I usually get my hair done at a beauty school- relaxers, cuts, styles, etc and never had a bad exp. These students are supervised anyway and usually I come out better than if I went to a regular salon. They are very polite, professional and they give you tips on what you should or shouldn't do. The only problem I had - a minor one- was when this Asian girl wanted to wash my hair and then cut it wet- and I explained to her that I'd already washed it beforfe I came and that my hair should not be cut wet (even relaxed, I have some serious shrinkage). The instructor swung by and informed her that "you don't cut their type of hair wet." :lachen: The girl felt kinda stupid.......

I love going to the beauty school- I get my hair did, eyebrow wax and pedicure- all under 100 bucks.

Just chiming in as a former student who has worked in a Beauty School Clinic.
-Find out which days the "senior" students would be on the floor of the clinic/salon. That way you are insured that the students with more experience are doing your hair.
-at lease back when I was in school (a loooong time ago) we HAD to practice on each other. Usually on the days that we weren't on the floor of the clinic.
-At least at our school, our teachers watched over us like HAWKS and stepped in when something wasn't going right.
-If you don't feel comfortable at any time WALK out, it's no different than any other salon. If you aren't happy, then express it and don't let the service go further.
-When students are in beauty school, they are getting taught BASICS, that grandma rollerset is what passes or fails you on your cosmetology license exam. So some are doing just what they know. Again, others have more experience styling than others.

Just my .02 cents.

I wouldn't dare get my hair relaxed or colored.
I went to a beauty school in my area which did braids (cornrows) for free and they turned out beautiful. It was a 2 week braiding class but the ladies sure could braid.
But I would never let them do anything permanent to my hair.
