Soooo...I made my own clip-in extensions

I've been wanting to do clip in high-lites for the longest time. I did a lot of research on it and eventually gave up. I wish I had found your post then, it would've been so much easier. Thanks for taking the time to post this and the videos. I will be trying this out for my high-lites soon. Do you think the technique would basically be the same? I'm thinking maybe smaller pieces so it will blend better. Sorry if you already mentioned this but did you use human or synthetic hair?

Hi ladies!

I finally attempted to put in clip-in hair...twice. The first time was a disaster b/c I used Body Wave Human Hair by Shake-N-Go (snghair.com). I bought two packs. This was not pretty b/c I realized that the hair was silkier than my own (I'm trying not to relax for a while), therefore highlighting the two very different textures. So I took them out and cut the clips off.

Next, I went back to the store the exchange the unused pack of hair. I told the asian lady that I needed to see hair with texture. She did a great job picking one out. It was Enstyle Human Hair Straight (12 inches). I also made the pieces that I sewed no longer than about 5 inches (I guess) so that if I wanted to try different style, they would be easy to rearrange. Then I lightly flat ironed the hair to blend and rolled the ends with solar rollers overnight. This worked out great. I also didn't use all the hair in the one pack I exchanged. It looks great and so real! Today, I'm going to try to add a bang which would set it off nicely. **Note: I didn't braid my hair at all**

It's no lumpier than when I used to get it bonded, so you can't see or feel anything, basically, unless you touch it and press really hard. I will try to take pics today, but if not, then they will be posted tomorrow. Thank you so much LiLi! I will be able to take better care of my hair w/ hardly any manipulation.

All of this made me wonder why beauticians would rather destroy your hair with bonding glue than help you with the clip-in method. I guess they wouldn't make as much money if they did, not to mention some of them don't even know about this themselves (just look at what they do to their own hair). I'm glad that I FINALLY found something that works and looks great i.e. not like a wig. Thanks again LiLi.:D

I just have to say that I love these clip-in's!!! It's been perfect in this hot weather! They are so easy to take in and out to when I'm doing my CW's. My husband loves them. I'm actually able to wear my hair in different styles that look so pretty while protecting my own hair.

Amazing...simply amazing:p

Hey Teressa!! I am soooo glad that it worked out for you. I'm also glad that the lady at the hair place didn't give you any problems with returning the hair.

I did the same thing as you. I did several wide pieces but also did several shorter pieces and then some 1 1/2" pieces so I can change it up whenever I want. It's soooo convenient; I mean it takes me about 1 minute to snap in about 4 pieces for a nice side ponytail. I also think it cool because you can add like 4 or 5 3" tracks and put it up in a high ponytail and not have to worry about it falling off (like what happened to this girl the other day when she was running for the bus ).

This weekend I am going to get a package of blond so I can try the highlights. And you are right, the only way people can really tell is if they are touching all up on your hair.

I plan on relaxing my crown area soon so I don't have to worry about flat ironing to get the textures to match.

Beauticians are a trip; I agree, some don't even know about it and some probably don't want to mention it because, then, they wouldn't get that customer coming in for a weave every 2-3 months.

I can't wait to see your pics!!

I'm glad that I could help by putting up the videos!! Hmmm ... that's something that you will have to play with because you want them to look natural. I was actually thinking about it recently because I want to put some blond in the mix. I had it done as a sew in a long time ago and my hairdresser alternated tracks (brown, blond, brown) but it didn't look right (IMHO - I'll try to add a pic of what it looked like later). I would say try doing equal amounts of blond:brown (or whatever color you are doing); but bobbypin it first so you can quickly change it if you don't like it.

I was actually thinking about adding the highlights by buying the hair in bulk instead on a weft and bonding it to the regular weft so that it would look more natural and I could get the exact color that I want. It's more time but you could play around with it more. I guess it all depends on how big you want the chunks of highlights to be. If you want bigger chunks of highlights then I would do like 10 1-clip pieces and place them where you want them. If anyone has any suggestions please chime in because I am soooooo new to this!!

Oh and I used human hair from the discount store. I plan on getting better quality hair (even though I am pleased with what I have already) in the future; but I am going to play with the discount store hair for a while before I spend more money.

Aren't they just the easiest to do!!! It just takes one minute to add the tracks. Let us know when you add pics of these in your hair to your album please :).

Also, what kind of hair are you using?

Thanks LiLi. I will probably do the one clip pieces since I don't want big chunks of hi-lites. But I'm thinking that onc clip pieces may be too chunky also....I'm not sure, I'm new to this also. Maybe I can cut the track to half the size of the clip and sew or glue it to the middle of the clip (if that makes sense), this way it won't be such a big piece. I dunno. I'll figure something out. I won't be using them until around September so I have plenty of time.

LiLi,

YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!

Yeah, so I haven't been on the site for a while trying not to be totally neurotic about my hair. My hair progress is going well but while watching HSN, I saw Toni Brattin Hair clip-in extensions. I purchased several types to try them out between $35-60 including shipping. They looked okay but not perfect and I was concerned about the texture since it's synthetic hair.

Thennnnnnnnnnnnnnn I read this. So I took my butt to Sally's and for less than freaking $10, I have enough to make for my mom and myself plus I have hair left over to make my puppy one if she wants one.

It looks absolutely perfect. I only need half sections since my hair is so jacked up on the left side. I can customize them for my thin areas. I love it and it's CHEEEEEAAAAPPPP!!!!

Thank you so much. Yesterday I went to the post office and sent the others back to HSN!!!!!

 That's funny. Take pics of your puppy if you do put them in.

I'm glad you were able to save some money!!! I hope you take pics and post them so we can see. How does your Mom like them?

You could start making money if someone requests them. Have them bring the hair they want to use. Measure them up like I did in the video, see if they like it; send them on their way and then charge them like $50 to do it (in hopes that you will only have to spend $10 on clips - you don't want them to buy the clips because then they will probably figure it out on their own ). I'm sure people would pay because they know they can put it in themselves and it will last for a while.

That makes a lot of sense!!!; because the full 1-clip piece would be for chunkier highlites.

Also, I'm sure one of us will come up with something before the end of this month .

And what the heck are we doing on here early in the morning .

I am very pleased with them. I made several wide pieces and several one inch pieces. Everyone actually thought it was my hair because my hair matched up so well with it and my hair is the same length. It only took about 5-10 minutes to sew 3 clips each track and I was in a hurry because my son's graduation was tonight. Anyhow, here is a pick of me with my nieces(I'm on the right). Tell me what you think.

Also, thank you to the ladies that responded to my post yesterday. I was in a panic and they came through.

I love these. I actually have the 1.5" pieces in the front of my hair. I already have four requests from people (after I told them it wasn't my hair) to do a set for them.
Lili, you did a wonderful job on this. Both the instructions and the video (which I still can't see in its entirety b/c of my stupid dial-up  ). I made some clipons like that last year bc I felt the ones youbuy were too doggone expensive.I actually had my BF help me sew them on and he did a better job than me w/the sewing! They looked natural---ONLY thing, I am a 2 and the hair was 1B so I never wore them out b/c of the difference :( My natural hair is too nappy now to try to wear it out but I coudl see how one could do the C&G method on the other areas easily :)

I'm glad you understood what I was saying. Yeah, somebody on here will come up w/ something. These girls are genius's on this site.

Thanks again for taking the time to explain to us in detail and do the video's. That was so kind. After all of my research trying to figure out how to do clip in's yours was the most detailed and helpful. Great job.

I know right....we were up some kind of early. I was on vacation from work and I was bored so I came here because I had the lhcf itch, lol.

Could you or someone PLEASE show me how to do a ponytail? I have been trying to figure it out, but it's just not working. BTW, I took the pictures with my digital camera, BUT now I can't find my USB cord to connect and download them to my computer. It's in the house somewhere...Sorry it's taking so long. Thanks again LiLi.

Well it depends on what kind of ponytail you want.

For a ponytail in the back that's higher (well no higher than the top of your earlobe), I would say make the tracks much less wider than you normally would. So do like, 3"-width tracks (maybe 3 or four of them depending on how much hair you want in the ponytail) and place them no wider than from ear to ear. That way, it will be easier to put it up and you don't have to worry about the tracks showing.

For the other ponytails (low or side), IMO, you would do it the same as in the videos; making sure that the tracks are not showing on the sides. I have been doing this with side ponytails with no problems.

I am going to try the higher ponytail when I relax my crown area in a few weeks. I'll make sure to take pictures as well.

Well I hope you find your usb cable!! I can't wait to see the pics :D.

I don't wear mine as much as I used to, but when I was wearing them regularly, I would come home from work and remove them and then moisturize my hair or shampoo/condition it or whatever. I never slept in them. I just put them back in in the a.m.

This site shows how to put them in: http://www.hairconspiracy.com/generic20.html

Thanks for posting this link HoneyDew! It was very helpful!

Re: Soooo...I made my own clip-in extensions - Videos are up

Lili - Thank you SO MUCH for this information. I have a sew-in now and LOVE long hair (which is why I've been in this forum for the past 4 hours, LOL) but love having the opportunity to be versatile and work with different lengths and textures on a regular basis. I will be making some clip-ins as soon as I take out this sew-in 2 weeks from now. I'm SO excited. LHCF is the BOMB!!!

had to bump this...I will be making my own this weekend. And to think I was about to spend about $280 when this will cost me less than 50 if I do it on my own...:lachen:

I have a questions: did anyone experience any slippage of the clip?

I am soooo happy I found this thread!!! I was going crazy trying to decide what to do with my hair cause I'm bored outta my mind with my sew in. I'm definitely gonna try this.

I have a question though. What is the best quality weaving hair? I'm about 5 months post or so and debating whether or not to transition so I may just invest in a good flat iron to straighten the hair I leave out.

ETA: Also, is there anywhere else I can buy the clips? There's no Sally's near me.

Bumpin for responses.

Somebody? Anybody?

MzLady,

You can find the clips at any Beauty Supply store. They are cheaper there too.

As far as slippage, it holds great. Just don't put alot of oil, grease, etc. on your hair, even though it still holds. It is the best alternative to sew-in/glue-in styles. Anybody, post pics of your styles to give the rest of us some good ideas. Thanks.

bumping...I wanna know if any natural 4Bs have done this without straightening the crown/front?
VEry informative thread Lili!!!:D

I look forward to seeing your results. I've been wanting to do a high ponytail for quite awhile. Any thoughts on what length hair to purchase? How many tracks do you suggest?

bumping ....i wanna know if anyone is still doing this?

I bought the hair and the clips, but I've been lazy and haven't made the time yet. I bought some human hair that I want to add in the top for a little length.

I want to rollerset the hair so it will blend in better with mine. I can do this, right?

I don't know how I forgot about this thread. I am going to look at the youtube directions tonight and make my clips. Whoo-hoo! I was nervous about getting my hair braided for the sew-in because I need to be able to keep it very moisturized and now this pops back up! YES!!!

Same here!!! I went and bought everything about 3 weeks ago, but have been too lazy to start making the extension clips.

How many are you making? Are you adding for length or fullness? What type hair are you using? (sorry if I'm being nosey -- just excited to hear someone else is making clip-ins.)

Girl I don't mind the questions, it's not a problem at all.

I have no idea how many I'm going to make yet. :spinning: Girl, it's too much of a thought process, which is probably why I haven't started yet. I want enough to cover my whole head. I'm going to braid my hair in like 5 or 6cornrows (per RabiaElaine's weave instructions) and go from there. I wish I could find some type of wig cap and make a wig out of them though.

I purcahed Sassy Human hair from Sally's (10") for like $9.99. I also bought thread, curvey hair needles (all this was at Sally's).
