Spin-off: Why don't they have to put expiration dates (or us by dates) on relaxers??

There is another thread going on about the shelf life of the Elasta QP Mango Butter and it stirred a thought in me about the shelf life of something even more critical - our relaxers. I can't really tell when I open my relaxer whether its old or how old it is. I do feel like my last relaxer took but it didn't seem to last. My hair has that texturized look and that's not what I'm going for. I stopped seeing the smooth straight look about 2 weeks into having my hair relaxed. I'm kind of scared now because I buy my relaxer at an asian BSS like a lot of other people but how do you know if you are getting the real deal???!!

I would love to buy my relaxer at Sally's but they don't sell a lot of the lye relaxers at Sally's.

That's a really great question! I always thought relaxers did come with Expiration Dates, but i guess i was wrong! Hmmmmmm. Interesting! :perplexed

This is a good question. I bought a relaxer at the store and when I got it home and opened it, it had turned a brownish color and was kind of hard. I took it back to the store and the lady says "oh no you definitely don't want to put that in your hair".

I remember years ago when the dates were on relaxers, but now none of them have them. That is why I don't like using boxed perms. You never know how long it has been sitting on the store shelf, or in the wharehouse for that matter. But, I guess that last comment could go for salon relaxers also.

i judge by the look. if it's cracked and dried on the top and/or around the edges i fish around for a new one or go to another store. dusty products are also a giveaway.

OT: your hair is beautiful!

So, are those the only ways to tell if its old? Nothing appeared to be wrong with my relaxer but I really wonder how old it was.

Bump does anyone know how to read expiration dates or batch numbers for Organic Root stimulator relaxers?

Ok so I just called the ORS people. She said that it can be good indefinatly as long as the product has not been opened. But after opening you are supposed to use it within 6 months. But yeah no expiration date. I think that is really silly!
