Hey Ladies,
Plese have a look at my Fotki to see the pictures. I was natural for so long and found that my hair was hard to manage so I got a texturizer. My hair did good with it the first and second time, but this third time my hair did not like it. My hair looked healthy and full on December 20, 2008 (pictures in my Fotki) and January 15, 2009 (pictures in my Fotki) my hair is all broken off and thin looking. I do not use heat at all. All of a sudden my hair just started coming out in large amounts when I combed it. I wear twist outs all the time and could not understand this. My hair would come out in my hands when I put my hands through it. So January I am beginning a new sort of. I wanted her to cut all of my hair off but she would not do it. I co washed my hair, did oil rinses, mega tex, Aphogee not all at once but think that the grown up perms were too much for my hair. I am going to let my hair grow for 6 months and see how my hair does. I am thinking about getting a kiddie (Just for me) Perm to texturize my hair once it gets healthier or heck I may not even deal with the chemicals anymore. I had not had chemicals in my hair for 7 or more years and had just worn braids all the time. A set back for me, but everything happens for a reason. Do you ladies have any suggestions?

Thakn you for your comments in advance,

sorry to hear about your hair. the 1st time i transitioned i did a texturizer too. didn't work out well either. but good news, you have the resources and support to get your hair back to health. :yep:

I'm so sorry to hear that happened. I thought kiddie perms had the same chemicals...are you sure that won't be too much as well? Either way, I'm glad you figured out the problem and know how to fix it. I'm sure your hair will be way healthier in 6 months time.

First off :bighug:

this too shall past. i had a setback with my used to be waitlength hair and i'm going natural again. you'll get your hair back on track & healthy again.

I'm thinking maybe this last time you didn't neutralize long enough. Maybe you can neutralize again a couple of times and let it sit for about 5 minutes each time. Then follow with a moisturizing poo and a reconstructor since they have moisture & protein. i don't think you want a heavy protein right away.

I wouldn't deal with any more chemicals until you figure out what went wrong this last time. you need to build the strength back up in your hair. I would follow a low manipulation regimen and keep your hair in a bun or something. i would DC with heat after each wash with a quality deep conditioner, use a good leave in, & moisturize & seal.
maybe try washing & DCing once a week and a co-wash once a week. then after a couple weeks try a heavier protein and follow with a good moisturizing deep conditioner.

i personally wouldn't use anything with cones in them.

This happened to me on several occasions transitioning from natural to texturiser or relaxer. In the end, my hairdresser told me that I am not a good candidate for chemicals because my hair had too many textures, dense and extremely dry. Once, I learnt my lesson in 2005, I have decided not to risk that again. I did not think too much about my set back which was really bad because I wore extension braids until my hair grew out nicely and evenly. What I realised this journey around is that natural hair is easy to manage if you use the right products and keep the moisture balance thing in check.

Best,

I wouldn't get a Just for me perm if I was you. You have very fine hair and no-lyes are a no-no for fine hair :nono:, at least that is what my stylist said before. I have fine hair too. I didn't listen to him and permed with just for me thinking that because it was for kids that it would be ok, but noooo it broke my hair off really bad and left me with a jermaine durpri/ tyra banks hairline and bald spots! And the only heat I used was a light blow out every two weeks on wash day.

You have very nice hair. It still looks healthy to me in your fotki pics. In one of the pics you said you got it straigthened at the salon. Did they use a hot comb on your hair? That might be the reason for the shedding. Hot combs and texturized/relaxed hair don't mix.:perplexed I would just go back natural or texturize with a lye relaxer after a few months. DC's every week should help.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. But you will get through this challenge. Any number of things could have caused the breakage. Do you keep a hair journal? Reviewing it could help you narrow down what went wrong.

I texturize my hair and I recently had issues with excessive shedding and some breakage. I pre-poo'd my hair with a garlic powder/EVOO mixture and applied heat with a soft-bonnet dryer. I then co-washed my hair then DC'd with a Cathy Howse recipe protein/moisturizing conditioner for another hour under the soft-bonnet dryer. The shedding and breakage stopped. I got this tip from the MegaTek/OCT threads on this forum.

The kiddie perms are no better. I use the Just for Me Texturizer and I had the same problem the first time I used it. (On a side note - this texturizer is pretty strong. A co-worker of mine was told by her hairdresser to not use it. Her hair is a very cottony soft 4B and the texturizer would straighten her hair.) I have coarse 4B hair and I texturized for the same reasons you did. My hair became unruly and always knotted. I was tired of trimming knots out of my hair. I thought loosening the texture would make it easier to deal with. I didn't realize I was trading one set of problems for another.

The first time I applied the texturizer I followed the directions exactly and even added additional oil to the perm and my hair. I lost a lot of hair and cried like a big baby. Why? The comb through directions was part of the problem. I used my shower detangling comb to comb the texturizer through my virgin hair and hair started coming out and breaking off. I also ending up overprocessing the front quadrants of my hair. My hair strands ended up with 3 different textures. The ends were coily, the shaft straight/wavy and the roots still a little kinky.

After doing some research I realized quite a few mistakes I made. I got a lot of good advice from Audrey Sivosothy's articles on the Associated Content web-site.

The second time I applied the same texturizer (12 weeks post) I first applied Revlon Porosity Control conditioner to my processed hair. I finger smoothed the texturizer through my hair and after the neutralization process my hair came out the way I wanted it. The third time I applied the texturizer (12 weeks post) I unintentionally left the texturizer in too long and relaxed my roots. However, I didn't lose any hair because of the protein and conditioning treatments. I didn't cry this time over over-processing my roots because I knew I could get my hair through it. I set my hair in two strand twists and bantu knot them every night before bed. In the morning my multi-textured hair ends up one even texture. I then either wear a twist out or put it in a protective bun.

There's a lot of good information on this forum and you will figure out what happened. Let us know what you did to solve the problem. I love success stories.

Sorry to hear that this happened to you! But, maybe by sharing you will help someone else....I don't think the kiddie perm is a good idea, either, if your hair doesn't react well to adult perms and texturizers. As some other people mentioned, it's basically the same chemicals. Maybe once your hair is back to being healthy & completely natural, you can try heat styling?

Keep us updated!

I was thinking the same thing. This is usually the problem when people experience this with relaxers. If ever in doubt..neutralize, neutralize, neutralize... I have no doubt that your hair will recover soon and be back on it's way to health. Good luck. :yep:

Be very, very careful Soror! Your texturizer looks pretty in the pics but you don't want to keep taking risks with you hair. If you must, give it one more go-round in six months and try to neutralize with a vengeance. Your hair may simply react poorly to chemicals so if it doesn't work this time, please don't force it.

I also agree with what has been said about so-called "kiddie" perms. The chemicals are the same as any other no-lye relaxer. It is mostly a marketing ploy. Companies just play with our minds by putting little girls on the box as if to say "this is mild" or "this is child's play."

I believe the whole no-lye thing is marketing too. Lye is sodium hydroxide. No-lye products use either potassium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide. If you peep the periodic table, sodium and potassium are both in the same family of highly reactive alkali metals. Calcium sits right "next door" to them.

All of these chemicals require care to use without severe damage to your hair or scalp. Lye perms are even considered to be less drying to most people's hair. Again, just be very, very careful! :yep:

Did you apply to the length of your hair or just the roots? Maybe there was some overlapping. They Phytospecific relaxer is pretty mild. Also if you decide to use chemicals again add oil the relaxer, some people add SAA also. Put conditioner or oil on the length of your hair in case you overlap unintentionally. Also do in smaller sections instead of processing all at once so each section has chemical on it for the same amount of time.

Is there anything else going on ex. Hormone imbalance such thyroid or are you post-delivery of an infant? Any recent stress or change in diet?

OMG! :bighug: I am SO sorry this happened to you.

Thank you for posting this. As many of you know, I've been really thinking about using some chemicals on my hair. Posts like yours really help me to make up my mind to stay natural.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE. WE ALL HAVE SETBACKS. JUST TRY TO MONITOR YOUR PRODUCTS . DO YOU THINK ITS THE MEGATECK? PEOPLE SAY YOU SHED WHEN YOU USE IT. DID YOU USE A TEXTURIZER OR JUST LET A RELAXER TEXTURIZE YOUR HAIR. TEXTURIZERS REQUIRE MORE MOISTURE THAN RELAXERS. RELAXERS REQUIRE MORE PROTEIN. JUST KEEP MOVING FORWARD AND DON'T GIVE UP. YOU WILL FEEL GOOD WHEN YOU PINPOINT THE PROBLEM. THEN CHANGE ACCORDINGLY. DONT GIVE UP!

I am sorry to hear about this mishap! This happened to me also. This was part of the reason I went natural. It seemed like my hair kept falling out.

I am so sorry this happened to you sweetie. Something similar happened to me the first time I texturized back in 2004 and I transitioned with yarn braid extensions and big chopped that following January. Like the other ladies have said, this too shall pass. :bighug:

I once messed up my progress too by fooling around with relaxers, even after knowing that my hair has ALWAYS broken from them.

All that to say, it'll be okay and your hair will recover.

Sometimes your hair just can't take the chemical from day one or your hair may become more sensitive to chems the older you become.

Give your hair and scalp a rest. Be good to it and it will definitely grow back.

I read that kiddie perms often have a higher pH than many adult perms (Just for me has a pH of about 13-14). The is a thread on the pH of different relaxers somewhere on here

Hey Ladies,
Thank you for you kind words. I did not do my testurizer myself I went to the shop. I do not use heat at all only when i went to the shope to get a touchup. I worn twist outs and did not use heat to dry it.
My diet is good, except I do not eat enough protein. I learned in August that i do not get enough protein in my diet when I went to get my hair washed. I ahve been a vegetarian for 14 years and think my lack of protin in my diet along with the txturizer did it. My hair wasn't in the best condition before i got the texturizer. I am so mad at my hair right now. I just want to grab some clippers and have at it. I think I am going to stay away from chemicals as you all have recommended for me to do. I just need to take this day by day. I plan to wash my hair and twist it up. I had that I can see through my hair. what do garlic pills do for the hair?

That could be it right there, don't be mad at your hair, it will get better.

:lachen: SHUT UP GIRL! :funny:

Anyway...keep moving forward. Learn from this mistake and keep it going. I know set backs can be a mutha but don't let it get the best of you. You're here with knowledgeable ladies and in no time you'll be back on track. Good luck, I always liked your hair. When I saw the title of this thread my heart went out to you. It will all be better...

Ok, this is totally off topic, but the pics in your sig make me want to starve myself, get a weave and some breast implants just in time for Valentine's! LOL

Hey Ladies,

Hmm, the only suggestion I have is for you to show some pics of this breakage you're worried about. You know atleast one photo of a lone hair resting on the counter with you pointing and screaming at it because from what your Fotki shows, your hair looks nice. :)

Okay. I am glad I am not the only one going through this either. I just used the Just for me Texturizer and used the whole bottle of oil that came with the kit and used avocado oil on my already relaxed her. I smoothed my edges and let the rest process for the alotted time. My edges were smooth as if I got a regular relaxer, but the rest was texturized. I liked it for the first 3 weeks. Now, I look like afro boogie. My hair is shedding and breaking all over the place. I have been doing weekly protein and moisture treatments and that has been helping.

So, don't worry. Your hair will be healthy in No time.

Hey Ladies,
When I get home, I will show you howe much of my hair came out everytime I combed it. Every week when I washed my hair I saved the hair in a baggy and put the date on it. Everysingle time I combed my hair a glob of it came out. I will post the pictures in my Fotki tonight. I know I just want to grab the clippers right about now.
