They all have beautiful hair! Every single one! They told me that my hair was a mess.

They are more obsessed about hair than I am. They told me that my hair is nappy and that i shouldnt wash everyday.

1. washing everyday will cause your hair to fall out
2.comb and brush everyday and use a curling iron.
3. never wet the hair or comb it while it is wet.
4. Wrap hair as tight as u can
u need a perm every four weeks. and trim it a half inch a month.
---
Maybe I'll just shut up from now on and let my hair speak for itself.

I know the feeling.

The women at my church have gorgeous hair. I'm talking type 3 and 4 bra strap length rollersets left and right. That hair will block my blessing if I don't start paying attention to the sermon! A lot of them are from "the islands," or their parents were. I'ma start getting local salon references from these ladies to kick off my Dominican salon tour this summer.

Washing everyday is too much handling for my hair. I comb once every 1-2 weeks while it's just damp. NO wrapping. And these tight coils will start matting and breaking if not relaxed every 8-10 weeks. But that's just me.

ANKY am I going to have to come to the NO and kick some arse for you! Your hair is gorgeous it's just going through a rough time right now. Keep doing what you're doing cuz you know it's working well and pretty soon your hair will be speaking for itself.

These are some things I would follow by before finding this forum. I wouldn't wash my hair a lot (every 2-3 weeks), I would comb my hair and sometimes use a brush everyday and used curling irons everyday. I tried keeping my hair from being wet as much as possible. Wet hair was like forbidden for black women. I would only comb my hair wet after washing it. I didnt start wrapping my hair until I was a junior in highschool and now I have stopped. I would get a perm every 4-6 weeks and hardly ever got a trim...
Believe it or not...my hair grew long!!!

Anky your hair does speak for itself. First of all, if you shouldn't be washing your hair everyday, why has it been responding so well. All of those tips are ole' school hair practices. Have you noticed that sometimes people show jealousy by being critical. I wouldn't even share my routine with them, if I were you.

You have beautiful hair and so shake the haters off!

Don't listen to 'em Anky. Your hair is thick and beautiful. BTW, the advice they gave... SUCKS
barf.gif
and i don't care HOW gorgeous their hair is.

Anky, those women sound like a bunch of b*tches. Don't pay them any mind and don't change the way you do your hair especially if it is working. Your 2 inches will be back by mid summer. The advantage is hair grows faster in the summer. Hang in there and keep your head up!!!!!

yeah, that advice looks highly suspect...... i think they're lying and think theyre being funny by telling you this stuff because there is no way that their hair looks the way you describe after going thru a beating like that every day... heffas!!!! if ya know like i know-- you need to go over to your maman and get her to put a root on those evil cows

I agree....They need to mind their business.....

Is it just me or do some women just get unnecessarily catty about things like hair and stuff when it gets hot outside....I say if they keep talking nonsense you handle them like you did the woman from your choir..

Hi anky! I just want to say that your hair looks wonderful! Also congratulations on your weight loss!!!

May I ask, how did you go about losing your weight? What type of eating plan and exercise program were you on and are you on now?

That advice sounds like a recipe for disaster. If they're hair is gorgeous and it's really their hair, they can't be following this advice. I think they are just messing with you and want to see your hair dry out and break off. Don't pay those haters any mind.

Hi again. I'd like to thank everybody for at least trying to cheer me up. My shedding and breakage is due to my stress: its finals week, the fact that my house got broken into twice, i missed three weeks worth of school because i got sick, and my close cousin passed away from complications from diabetes. I haven't been eating right lately either.

By no means do i want the lurkers to think that we women on here are catty and crazy about our hair (and beyonce's hair) only. More importantly we care about our internal and external health. this is why we vent and ask for help on this board. I was very unaware that people at my job cared more about my hair than I did:

"You're a lady. You don't need to wear your hair in that old lady's bun everyday. Don't you want the men to notice how long your hair is?"

I also want to say that I sincerely love you all
kiss.gif
Thank you all for caring. I'd do the same for you guys, and anyone else.

"You're a lady. You don't need to wear your hair in that old lady's bun everyday. Don't you want the men to notice how long your hair is?"

Sometimes attitudes like this make me want to forget about growing my hair out. I really want alot of hair, but sometimes other people put more emphasis on long hair than i'd like. Yeah, I want to grow it out and yeah being on this site motivates me to keep up with my routine (which I really should be doing anyway - it's basic maintanance) but when I here a guy say "do what ever to your hair just don't cut it" or a girl suddenly thinks that my natural hair is pretty all of the sudden because it's gaining length, it makes me

I didn't hear all this good/bad hair mess on the regular until I came down south for school. It makes me wanna cry sometimes to see this stuff at work.

Don't let these hair haters get you down, Anky.

You'll prove 'em wrong by attaining your hair goals and then some.

omg is that the "advice" they gave you? they deserve a severe beating! as far as i can tell your hair looks great, just keep doing what your doing an the lenght will come.

Gee, I was just thinking the same thing.

Your progress will shut them up. I've had a lot of people tell me what to do with my hair, but as soon as they saw me making progress, they haven't had much to say.

Anky, I saw pictures of your hair and it is very lovely. Some black people are really sad, I myself don't like the word nappy, because I think it is very insulting, however whenever you do to your hair and it works, it is good, I don't understand this obsession of getting rid of our hair. I was speaking to someone I know and when I told her I wet my hair everyday, she told me that I want to be like white people, I told her that it is nothing to do with white people but my hair needs moisture and whenever I wet my hair regularly everyday, my hair grows faster, if I don't the length stays the same. Yes, probably at church their hair does look nice, especially after you've been to the hairdresser, but I think it is far better to be able to have beautiful thick hair, which has a wonderful sheen produced by your own hands. Unfortunately at lot of black women are under the spell of their hairdressers, and a lot of people still believe that black hair needs grease, it must be washed every two weeks, it grows better when it is dirty. When some of those same ladies see another woman with black, long thick healthy hair, whenever it be natural, texturised or relaxed, they can't believe that it is theirs, they want to say it is a weave, then you ask if you have mixed blood, then they assume it is long because you are mixed. The same rubbish all over again.

Please continue what you are doing with your hair, as long as it works, that is fine, since we have been rinsing daily or washing 2-3 a week, however we giving our hair moisture, however hair has improved greatly. Keep up the good work Anky

COSIGNING.

And not only that, but just because someone's hair grows long even tho they wash it once a month doesn't mean it's a GOOD thing to be doing. It may work for THEM (and judging by the quality of the hair of many women I see that follow this practice, I'd rather NOT have their hair - long or not.) , but that doesn't make it right for YOU.

I'd give you some responses to the "your hair looks a mess" comments, but we have youngsters on the board and I'd have to use grown folks talk - so I'm going to refrain...

The best revenge is living well, girl. Do your thing, let your hair grow, keep doing what's working for you, and IGNORE the advice that never worked for you in the past. Especially when it's unsolicited.
smile.gif

ITA...I am not surprised at how some women(especially 'us', yeah I said it
smile.gif
) Will tell you something opposite of what THEY do to see you do it, and to see your hair snap off. If you take their responces and twist them around, they are telling you their regime....

You said:
"They are more obsessed about hair than I am. They told me that my hair is nappy and that i shouldnt wash everyday.

4. Wrap hair as tight as u can

Translation: If they are hair obsessed, that means that they are making sure not to do anything that will make their precious hair break off...Twist their words around and you will understand what I mean,

"1. washing everyday will cause your hair to FLOURISH
2. DO NOT comb and brush everyday and DO NOT use a curling iron.
3. MORE OFTEN THAN NOT wet the hair or comb it while it is wet.
4. Wrap hair as LOOSE as u can
u DO NOT need a perm every four weeks. and trim it ON AN AS- NEEDED BASIS."

Man, I tell ya, jealousy is a SICKNESS. You keep doing what you are doing and I wouldn't worry about them. They need a serious dose of haterade.

Update: The ladies at work leave me alone now. I have one that has jumped on the haircare bandwagon with me
grin.gif
They do still ask me all the time why don't I wear my hair down everyday, and I tell them. Instead of having attitudes now they just laugh, and I think that's fine
smile.gif

I told one nurse at work that I wanted hair down to my bra clasp and she said, "Girl you want long hair like them white folks?" Then I showed her the FOTM pictures on this site... She was in awe
