The ladies at work

Anky, I'm glad to hear that your situation has been resolved. There are always going to be ignorant people and sometimes we have to realize that they only say what they know to be "right" even if it isn't - they don't know any better. It's good that you're trying to educate them and refer them to resources. Just concentrate on YOUR hair and tell them to worry about theirs instead. Keep smiling!

1. washing everyday will cause your hair to fall out
2.comb and brush everyday and use a curling iron.
3. never wet the hair or comb it while it is wet.
4. Wrap hair as tight as u can
u need a perm every four weeks. and trim it a half inch a month.

[/ QUOTE ]

These are some things I would follow by before finding this forum. I wouldn't wash my hair a lot (every 2-3 weeks), I would comb my hair and sometimes use a brush everyday and used curling irons everyday. I tried keeping my hair from being wet as much as possible. Wet hair was like forbidden for black women. I would only comb my hair wet after washing it. I didnt start wrapping my hair until I was a junior in highschool and now I have stopped. I would get a perm every 4-6 weeks and hardly ever got a trim...
Believe it or not...my hair grew long!!!

This might be true for relaxed hair, but women who wear their hair natural can and MUST comb their hair while wet. It's simply a MUST. Also, keep your hair away from heat as much as possible. I suggest the No-Poo method as well. Use conditioner to wash hair instead of detergent-heavy shampoos. Keep the ends moisturized. And most important, don't listen to the haters!!! Women can be so VERY mean! Wipe that dirt off your shoulders, girl!

Update: The ladies at work leave me alone now. I have one that has jumped on the haircare bandwagon with me

They do still ask me all the time why don't I wear my hair down everyday, and I tell them. Instead of having attitudes now they just laugh, and I think that's fine

I told one nurse at work that I wanted hair down to my bra clasp and she said, "Girl you want long hair like them white folks?" Then I showed her the FOTM pictures on this site... She was in awe

Hi, I know you all are tired of this thread and the women at my job. but i wanted to post this (from my online journal)

[ QUOTE ]
one of them told me the other day: "Oh, so you washed your hair again? You wash your hair too much. You know, if you wash your hair everyday, you will get a fungus on your scalp." I politely told her thank you, and went on to work.

I usually get a relaxer every three months. Right now I am at the three month mark and currently am wearing a twist out, which makes my hair appear wavy. When I wear my hair like this, someone (particularly a certain one) always has to say: "It's time for you to get a relaxer, Girl. (same one that told me that 'not even white people wash their hair everyday')" I politely told her that I was going to get braids and didn't need a touch-up.

Why the hell did she feel as though she HAD to tell me that I needed a relaxer? Couldn't her crazy behind at least try to make a tactful remark, or no remark at all? My hair has grown 5 inches since I started working there in May 2004 and the ladies that steadily talk about my hair... their hair has not budged.

When I wear my hair flat ironed, my hair is past my bra strap. When I wear it like that, I hear: "Your hair looks nice. Who did it? [of course, I did it] Why don't you wear your hair like that all the time?" Then another one said, "Yea, you need to wear it like that all the time because when you wear your hair in a ponytail [wet bun], Ugh, I just can't stand when you wear it like that!"

Yes, those two ladies have ok heads of hair. They go to the beautician every week. One's length is at her shoulders (not in the front though) and since she wraps her hair daily, it appears thin, as if she has no hair at the nape. The other one, her hair is beautiful, a bit past her shoulders and shiny. But just because they have nice looking hair, doesn't mean they have to talk about my hair and haircare methods so much: "Ugh, mayonnaise? You put that crap in your hair? Oh God, don't tell me you've been dying your hair with dirt again [that's what they call hennalucent]."

I am going to let my hair speak for itself. When my hair is waist length, they will be wishing that they followed my haircare tips. [I won't be working there anyway by the time I reach this length, but I'll just visit to say, "Hi"].

Well one nurse caught on to the fact that my hair has grown much. She secretly asked me for a proven oil blend that stimulates growth. When I was writing down the recipe, one nosy co-worker asked me [the one that is balding], "What are you writing?" The nurse said, "She's just writing me a recipe, for a cake."

It annoys the heck out of me that these people are more worried about my hair than I am.

Ladies, I have to hear that every day at work. Every Single Day /images/graemlins/frown.gif

you might have to get gangsta at work and tell them to shut the %$#@ up. oops sorry i am hormonal right now. Tell them tactfully that you dont need their daily commentary on your hair. And their advice could be best used on their own hair cause your way is working for you. Shake the haters off! You must be on their minds 24-7 for them to feel like they have to say something every day.

/images/graemlins/lachen70.gif /images/graemlins/lachen70.gif /images/graemlins/lachen70.gif All things are possible and they are real pressed about YOUR head!?
It's just talk, let 'em keep talkin'. What's bothering them even more is the fact that you aren't listening or bothered by what they say. Ppl want the pwr to move others and the hate ain't workin' /images/graemlins/nono.gif. It's hard for some women to admit that another woman has something on them. /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

Don't change the way you do your hair for nobody. If it works for you that is all that matters. I would not give anything they said a second thought. The B*tches need to mind their own business anyway. OHHHHHHHHHH don't get me started!!!!! /images/graemlins/angry2.gif /images/graemlins/censored.gif

Don't pay any attention to them, I always had co -workers talking about my hair, because I never wore it out and they got theirs styled every week. One lady told me I moisturized my hair too much, while her hair was super dry. I also had someone say what is the point of having all that hair if you don't do anything with it? I saw this girl last week and I hadn't seen her in 8 months and she said your hair is too long when are you going to cut it?/images/graemlins/huh.gif

I think these girls envy you, I'm sure they can tell that you know what you are doing to your hair and they are clueless. Especially if your hair has grown and thier has not.

Aw Anky,

Don't listen to them!!! I disagree with most (if not all) of the suggestions they have given you!

Just keep up w/your regimen. It'll get better!

Girl, don't even sweat it I have a woman like that at work too. I love her but every time....
Woman: so you're wearing that bun again huh?
Me: Yeah, cause I like it like that.
Woman: Why don't you ever wear it down
Me: Cause I don't like it like that
Woman: How long is your hair?
Me: <I show her>
Woman: Why do you keep it so long?
Me: Cause I like it like that.

/images/graemlins/lachen70.gif /images/graemlins/lachen70.gif /images/graemlins/lachen70.gif Love her! /images/graemlins/lachen70.gif

Faith- next time she asks you why you keep so long you should reply "because I like having longer hair than most women I'm around."

Actually she keep asking so many questions last week that I added to my USUAL response. I said..I want it waist length cause I've been told black women can't grow it long. She didn't argue. Good thing I like about her is she may ask a lot of questions BUT she never disses what I have to say in response.. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif She even asked me about that oil blend that's supposed to promote growth because her husband is balding a bit and she's getting thin up top as well.

You can help them and set them straight at the same time by telling them that since you've been there your hair has grown while theirs has stayed the same length so you must be doing something right. They won't have anything else to say after that.

Oh okay then, she probably wants you to volunteer more info. At first I thought she was a hater but it seems like she is curious.

I agree with MsPortugal, you might have to get gangsta on 'em and tell them their shortcomings. /images/graemlins/angry2.gif
