Too Much Conditioning?

Either A Blessing Or A Lesson.
Is it possible to over condition 4 A/B hair? I co-wash every night and pre-treat with ORS Hair Mayonnaise or Lustrasilk Shea Butter Con. Now depending on what I have to do that pre-treatment may sit on my head for a couple of hours. I wear my hair in a bun daily and use shea butter and NTM silk touch leave in. I also baggie up my ends with Elastra QP Mango butter. My hair never seems to be worse off for it, but considering how I've abused my hair in the past with grease and pink oil, I could be doing damage and not know it.

Most articles (aimed at hair types 1-3) all warn about the dangers of over-conditioning i.e., making the hair limp and lifeless. My hair don't know nothing about being limp (Ya Heard!)

I tried searching the archives for this topic but the closest subject was too much protein and I understand how that works.

Thanks in advance!

Over conditioning leaves my hair limp and damaged looking.

Maybe you could just use one or two conditioning products and see if that's enough.

Yes, you can overcondition 4a/4b hair. Overconditioned hair breaks easily and feels too soft. Unless you're having problems like this, I wouldn't worry about it.

you have 4a-b hair. so do, I just couldn't imagine washing my hair everynight...nightmare even thinking about that.

Actually It's not bad. I'm transitioning to natural without using heat so daily con-washing is not as high maintenance as it sounds. I lose less than 50 hairs per day in combing and have only had 2 split ends (that I could find) in the last 4 months.

There isn't a whole lot in my album, but feel free to take a look at what I'm doing.

Your hair is really pretty and healthy looking!!

I air dry in a ponytail. I try to at least wait for the new growth to dry before tying my hair up for bed.

I did that wet hair to bed thing once and woke up like :ill:

ITA. Just pay attention to the effects it may or may not be having on your hair.

btw, how do you make sure the ng is dry? What do you do? That's always the last to dry on my head.

When I airdry in a low ponytail (nape of neck) the water runs down the hair and the relaxed ends dry last. When I have airdried in a high pony (crown of head) or with my hair loose the new growth would take much longer to dry.

To answer your question Jcoily, yes you can overcondition. I washed my hair Monday night, and when I got out of the shower, I realized that I was...OUT OF CONDITIONER! I had to run to the store and get conditioner, but by the time I got home, I was so exhausted, that I tied my hair up and went to bed. I let my hair airdry without conditioner, and it was the softest I had seen. If you don't condition, make sure to thoroughly moisturize after you wash. My hair is pliable, and more manageable than it was with the conditioner, and I'm 16 weeks postrelaxer.

I find that when I haven't had a retouch in a while and the new growth is coming in, the conditioner sometimes gets stuck in my hair, and I can never seem to wash it all out. Then when it dries, it feels harder, and I have a harder time adequately styling my hair. So again, yes you can overcondition and clog your scalps pores, which may result in more breakage!

Well I leave my condioner in everyday...but I do 1 protein treatment a week so my hair doesnt become too soft and mushy. But then again the effects of overconditioning arent that serious if you're natural, I think if I was relaxed I wouldnt use the technique Im using now.

I agree. When I conditioner wash every day and do a protein treatment once a month I have very little breakage. I wear my hair in a medium size afro usually with a scraf or a headband. I don't know if I would condition so much if I still had a perm. But, you should do what feels right for you.

For me the only time I have a problem with conditioning is when using too much protein. I do daily conditioning washes and use NTM con. as leave in w/o any effects. I have done the too much protein thing more than once so I have learned for myself that a minimal amount is all I need.

NO YOU CANNOT OVER CONDITION 4B HAIR...I KNOW THIS TOPIC IS OLD BUT IN CASE SOMEONE CAME IN TO TAKE A LOOK SEE, I HAD TO SAY SOMETHING..IF YOUR HAIR IS BREAKING OFF, YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THE INGREDIENTS IN THE CONDITIONER YOU'RE USING. I HAVE BEEN USING CONDITIONER AS A WASH DAILY AND A LEAVE IN FOR THE PAST 7 MONTHS, WITH NO PROTEIN TREATMENTS AT ALL....PLUS I TAKE VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS DAILY..NO BREAKAGE AT ALL...I LOVE TO STOP IN THE FORUMS ONCE IN A WHILE JUST TO SEE WHATS BEING TALKED ABOUT...IT SOMETIMES QUITE FUNNY...JUST LIKE THE "CONE" FACTOR...THE TRUTH IS CONES ARE GOOD FOR THICK BLACK NATURAL HAIR...MATTER OF FACT ITS SOMETHING THAT IS NEEDED...NOW IF YOUR HAIR IS LIMP, FINE AND DULL THEN CONES ARE BAD...ENOUGH SAID

Way too much of anything - even good things - tends to be bad.

The point that is "too much" is different for every individual though :yep:

I just got a relaxer-bone straight. :ohwell: My hair is limp, fine, and thin.:wallbash: In my attempt to bring back some body, and wear off the 'newness', I have been DC on dry hair every nite, for about 3 wks now, but I also have been doing protein treatments. No breakage, newness hasnt worn off though.:nono: I am still in the stage where I HAVE to do something to my hair daily. I wonder if this can cause thinness?

IA with it going down the drain. The only thing that really seems to work is my Joico, but how can I not use all the other stuff I have sitting under the cabinet?......

IT is Definitely Possible to OVER CONDITION any hair - over-conditioning your hair means you've used so much conditioner that the waxy layers are weighing your hair down, making it limp and unmanageable.

But is it still possible if you balance it off with protein? :perplexed Before I knew about protein balance, I would overmoisturize my hair. It would get really mushy and break. Lesson learned. Now I know when to back away from both or at least I try to.....

Thank you for this entire post. You can DEFINITELY over-condition 4a/4b natural hair. I know because I've done it before. My hair was overconditioned when I was avoiding protein like the plague.

Yes, hair can be overconditioned. I'm starting to think that moisture DCs can't be left on my hair for the required time.
