I have a DC that I use every other week, but I only leave it in while I wash my body. I’m much too lazy to get out of the shower and let a DC sit on my hair for an extended period of time.

I feel you! Jumping in and out of the shower is such a hassle. That's why I started to do my hair outside of the shower. That gives me an idea! I could do the same, and just use my DC like it's a rinse out.

Can anyone reccomend me a heavy topper gel? I'm looking for something to smoothe and weigh down my hair, it doesn't necessarily have to have a super hard hold, just be heavy.
For example, ecoslay Jell-O shot is the hardest hold gel I've ever used, but I don't find it to be very heavy and smoothing. It just freezes my hair in place.
wetline on the other hand is very viscuous and good at almost straightening out my hair, but the hold is nowhere near that of Jell-O shots.

Another question, how do I get less crunch with jello shot? I love love love this gel but the hold is scary I think it might break my hair off lol.I know this is a wash n go thread but I just have to share this here —
i tried Jello Shot for the first time this wash day on a twist out and OMG, why did I wait so long? I think I finally found a gel that can hold up to my hair! I may try a wash n go next time

@Mapleoats hmmm do you do your hair soaking wet? I find that water weighs my hair down if that makes sense.
For jello shot, that hold was more like a kung fu grip on my hair lol. I used curly magic underneath and a ton of water to try and lessen it, that helped, but ultimately stopped using it.

I like the idea! Even if you alternate every other week that is 1.5hrs saved!I've been experimenting with different wash styles (cowashing and conditioning, shampooing and conditioning, shampooing and dcing), and shampoo+dc is still the champ. It makes my wash day so much longer, but the level of moisture my hair retains lasts me all week. But dcing gives me a 2+hr wash day.
So my options are:
1. Shampoo+DC+Style=2 hrs once a week
or
2. Cowash+Condition+Style= 30 mins twice a week
I'm picking option 2!!
I'm going to shampoo and dc tomorrow to reset my hair. Then I'm going to cowash and condition for two weeks straight, and I'll reset on week 3. Also my hair doesn't tangle up, so I'll brush through it once a week.
Imma try it out for a month and see how my hair does!

I Create Hold is excellent for smoothing and doesn’t have the super strong hold that jello shot has.
I don’t get super strong hold with jello shot, but my hair lasts a week with working out 5-6 days a week. I use it on very wet hair with UFD under it. That is my all time favorite combo.

@oneastrocurlie hmmm, not really, I usually do my hair on t shirt dried hair. I should give soaking wet hair a try, but as soon as I get out the shower it's not soaking wet anymore lol

Today I officially "reset" my hair.
I shampooed with Harm Me Knot and Dc'd with TGIN Hydrating Mask. I used Leave-in Condish and Honey Curls to style (I searched old posts and saw that I used to use the two together!). I applied both to 4 sections and only did smoothing. No raking! Total from wash to styling was 1hr 25 mins!!! That's down from my usual 2 hr wash days. I'm very happy!
Today is the first day of the new routine. I'll shampoo and DC again in 3 weeks!

That sucks. I hope it works better for you in the spring.Honey Curls is staying under the cabinet until Spring. Why is it the next day and my hair's dry. I'm annoyed and this hair is staying clipped up until wash day.
I used UFD, ICH and Bamboo Ginseng. To be honest, I've started reducing the amount of ICH and BG. Now, I have way more movement. For a long time I was getting helmet hair, but now I can change my part on dry hair if I want to. Also by reducing the toppers, my curls are completely individual as if shingled instead of being in large clumps like sheets of pasta. I don't have time to shingle nor separate curls after my hair is dry. ICH knocks out any additional frizz as well as plumps the curls. Then BG is truly a humidity fighter. My hair will look untouched by the elements even if I walk in light rain and spend a day out in Scooby-Doo-pea-soup-thick fog.
I could probably get it smoother and have more hang-time if I use more of all 3 products. It's makes my hair super flat as is. So, I try to be more conservative with these products. This combo will be a godsend for when my hair gets big and long.
I agree with others that Innersense I Create Hold and African Pride Moisture Miracle Curl Defining Gel are heavy and smoothing. I do have a few more. Check out the following:
-Just For Me Peace Curl Curl Slime
-All about Curls High Definition Gel
These provide smoothing and weight, but are not necessarily "gels".
-Miss Jessie's Honey Curls (gelee)
-Mielle Rosemary Mint Styling Creme (cream gel)
-Mixed Chicks Coil, Kink, and Curl Styling Cream (cream gel)
This is totally alternative. This would be a cream topper. If it didn't leave my hair white, this would be my mid week styler.
-Shea Moisture Make It Last Wash N'Go Curl Primer
I will say that some things feels heavier because of your base styler. The first time I used The Doux Pop Lock Curl Forming Glaze, I felt it froze my hair in place but with frizz. It didn't have enough weight. I later used it over Ouidad Curl Quencher Moisturizing Gel and I could instantly see it start to weigh my hair down.

Yep, it is a struggle. Don't forget that shampoo is on a spectrum. You might need a more cleansing yet moisturizing shampoo. Since you aren't a product junkie, maybe try consulting your curl specialist to see what she suggests.
Example from most cleansing to least
Bekura Beauty Fatty Coconut Hair Froth > Innersense Hydrating Hair Bath > Curls Blueberry Bliss Reparative Hair WashOne other thing to consider is rinse, lather and repeat. If the first shampoo isn't foaming well, that means your hair is still "dirty" and needs an additional shampooing. Supposedly, professional shampoos don't have fake bubbles and only foam when the hair is clean.

Yeah, I feel like I used to love Honey Curls back in the day. But the last few times I've tried it, it's just given me super dry next day hair. My hair is fine on wash day. It just dries out over night

IKR, but you don’t need a whole lot. The prices went up when they rebranded their packaging.
I'm so glad that Fo Adunni posted videos discussing the hair tangling with botanical gels. I only get that with UFD. Without the toppers, I'd rarely use it as a single styler. For me, the toppers help give it more slip. I've used UFD on top of leave-ins and it has perfect slip. So the problem comes from using the product directly on top of my naked hair. Its sort of like how KKCC can feel (not sound) squeaky and resistant if the hair isn't wet enough.
I rarely have the knots that she gets, but it has happened before. This is one of the countless reasons why I don't use it for a midweek rewash. Luckily the wash and go can last for many days.
What helps is keeping the bathroom warm and steamy. Also, rewetting my hands with warm/hot water helps them slide through to rake. I don't dip my head back under water because my hair will get very heavy and flat. It also increases the dry time.
I use to do it the same way she describes as a solution in this video. My hair was way too flat and limp when I did it this way. This is also what brought out my inner product junky. I was trying to find a product that didn't weigh my hair down so much.

I’m really interested in the part about your curls being completely separate. I do a lot of raking to try and achieve that result. I end up with a lot of small very well defined curl clumps, but they snag on each other so I don’t think I could change my part without causing a lot of frizz. This technique also results in a lot of shrinkage.
I’ve always thought adding a silicone serum at the end might help with the snagging, but then I would have to use a strong shampoo to remove it. Or maybe I need to rake less so that my curl clumps are bigger, then there would be fewer clumps to snag on each other.

She only has a topper at this time. She has been using it on clients for months. I don't know how I missed this. I think she mentioned that she is in the works of making other products.
I'm so interested in this product. She mentioned that it will provided added shine because her clients care about that. I felt seen with that statement. I'm not a client but I want my shine. I also don't feel it would take a major learning curve to add it to my routine such as something like Nurture Water Locking Gel or MoKnowsHair Curl Setting Gel.
I initially thought that the vantage point of a bird's eye view was a major reason for why stylist are able to properly separate curls. I didn't take in to consideration the amount of products that they use was just as important. I just think I've been heavy handed.
One of the reasons why I started using more of the BG is because of how it dried on my hair. It feels like a gel that the crunch can be scrunched out when used heavily. Even if my curls dried stuck to each other, I could still pull them apart because of BG texture. PS would be like plastic and there was no way to pull apart clumped curls when dry. I would break my hair if I tried to pull them apart. The stylist I went to used PS on my hair each time, and I never had that stuck curls together issue. So obviously, it was a me problem.
I'm now literally glazing on my toppers in big sections. I'm treating it like the Kinky Curly system. UF is my styler and the toppers are simply sealants. Maybe its changed because I'm no long treating UFD like a leave-in. My formula beforehand was like 65%UFD +20%ICH+15%BG but a whole lot of all that. My formula now is more like 83%UFD+8.5%ICH+8.5%BG. After I changed that, I noticed that the curls on the back of my head stayed separate. I don't think UFD has enough hold on its own to stick my curls together like that.
Before resorting to serum, maybe trying changing your ratio of products. I do see some people online who are making large clumps and pulling them apart when dry. If I am understanding you correctly, you don't plan to pull them apart? How do you think that would that look? On my hair it looks a little Side Show Bob like. It especially looks that way because the only parts that stays together are the ends and the rest tries to separate.

My go to combo is UFD/JS. I probably use 80% UFD and 20% JS. I’ve always been afraid that if I don’t use enough JS my hair won’t last a through a week of tough workouts, but I’ll give it a try.
I don’t plan to make super large clumps, but just not rake them as small as I currently do.
