Do I like the Doux Chief Rocka?
The good:
The good:
- It dries decently with a diffuser. Still much longer than regular mousse by itself.
- Its much softer than regular styling foam that uses Polyquaternium 55. Feels similar to putting leave-in lotion/cream under mousse.
- It washes out easily.
- Hair has lots of flexibility
- It doesn't clump as well as other harder holding Polyquaternium 55 styling foams.
- It dried flat at the roots while the rest of the hair expands when sitting under a hooded drier.
- The air dried parts don't seem to have as much shine. Must try a third time to verify this one.
- Its still too light of a product for my hair underneath in the back of my head.
- I barely have enough for 3 whole head applications.

I haven’t been in this thread in a long while, so I’ll just give a quick rundown of my hair characteristics:
Coarse strands, high density, low porosity
Detangles easily, frizzes a lot
And now the novel lol:
The last time I was really in the forums, I was frustrated with the lack of elasticity and curl definition in my hair. So I became very focused on gaining elasticity and definition via strengthening products and protein, and less focused on wash n gos. This past fall, I discovered bond building products, which has propelled me into everything going on with my hair today. I currently am using the Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Bond Building products: the shampoo, the mask, the conditioner. I checked the ingredients, and the mask and conditioner have what appears to be the same ingredients but just in different formulations. I use these two products to co-wash/condition.
Since maybe mid-November/early December I’ve been attempting wash n gos will greater motivation.
Here is where it started:
A thought struck me one day about how I don’t get my hair wet enough before I start conditioning or washing it in the shower. So, I decided that from then on, I would wet my hair for ten minutes in the shower (I timed it). Then I would apply conditioner and let it sit during the rest of my shower and then rinse it out. After my shower, I’d apply either leave in or conditioner and detangle, and then apply gel.
Right away I could tell a difference in my hair just from the increased rinsing at the start of my shower because my hair would feel genuinely soft when I would rinse conditioner out afterwards. So motivated by that, I just kept that routine up, and I did this about 4-5 days a week.
Very recently (maybe two weeks ago), I switched up this in-shower routine, and instead of rinsing for 10 minutes, I only rinse for maybe 5-6 minutes, and I cowash for the remaining time. But the key change here is that I stay under the water for as much of that time as I can before the conditioner is rinsed out of my hair. So I’m still adding water but I’m massaging in the conditioner too. In the past, I would make sure that once I added conditioner I wouldn’t add more water while I cowashed, because I was trying to hold onto as much conditioner as possible.
I have also started monitoring how curly or frizzy my hair is right out of the shower. There’s still A TON of frizz, but there’s actually slightly more definition than there was when I started this all in November. My ultimate goal is to have hair that retains curls when wet from the shower.
Around this time I also started using the combo of KCKT and the olive oil (?) Eco Style gel. I still go in with the KCKT first, and detangle with a knockoff version of the Unbrush. This is the only time I detangle. (In the shower I might smooth some but there is no real detangling done here). And then after I go in with the gel, I smooth and rake, no brushing. Lately when I do this my hair has come out soft and curly (as curly as it can be in its current state). I noticed that the Eco Style goes on very smooth and my hair feels soft right away. I tried one of the gels from The Doux and I wasn’t happy with the application or results, so while I used it all up, I don’t feel like I need to re-purchase any time soon.
This morning when I refreshed (I typically do my hair at night and then clip it up or lightly bun it or just cover it with a bonnet) (I refresh only with water, and sometimes with the Eco Style gel, but never with another product) I noticed that my hair was very spirally in areas but also it was hanging longer. My hair also just feels soft and bouncy a lot more now than it has in the past. This is great motivation to keep going because I know I can actually get presentable hair with the routine I’m doing. I can’t wait to see how my hair is in another two months, since it’s improved so much in that same time already.

@CurlyWhoCrux - I’m glad your hair is getting better. I listen to music while I wash my hair and I always spend at least one song just wetting my hair before I shampoo. And squishing water into my hair during the conditioner step was another breakthrough for me.

I’ve find bentonite clay to be the best at resetting hair the more you use it. Weekly. Followed by deep conditioning with rhassoul.
Simple bentonite with acv and water to clean. And rhassoul with coconut milk to condition.
The more you do it, the less frizz. The more your hair accepts product better and stays in its curls shape. @CurlyWhoCrux

On yesterday, I used the following for a gel wash-and-go:
Prepoo and detangle: Derma E mask
Cleanse: Doux No Scrubs Wash-and-Go Collection Exfoliating Shampoo
Condition (treat): Doux That's Deep Wash-and-Go Collection Deep Conditioner
Condition (hydrate): squish to hydrate using Gingham Gorgeous Bath and Body Works conditioner
Condition (moisturize): As I Am Bond Leave-in Conditioner
Style: Mielle Kalahari Melon & Aloe Vera Curl Forming Glaze
Style: Innersense I Create Hold gel
Veerrrrry moisturized, defined, and shrunken. The scent of the Mielle is nice and is detectable next day, but during application I started feeling sick from its intensity. This wng reminds me of that slick-back wng that trended on YouTube 5 or 10 years ago.
I have totally slept on that Innersense gel. I had been using it on wet hair, and it was nice. But on damp hair?!?? Wowwwwww.

I finally got a proper shaping on my longer hair, to
I styled it today with the Alodia butter and gelly custard.

- obtain a shape such that I can TRULY wash and GO!, and
- get a fresh start as I start a 10-year growth journey to try to reach shoulder-length curly hair.

They were indeed RUNNING on those streets! Boy, LOL. I just try to remember to be grateful that they taught me to squish to condish and introduced me to Innersense gel. One of their follower stylists gave me a SERIOUS HAIR CUT when I went in for a simple trim. I was not happy.

I was scared to get a real shaping, too. I just can't have my hair jacked up. It makes styling hard, which makes mornings hard, which makes LIFE hard.
What I did was follow a good stylist in my city on Instagram. I watched for a few years and finally took the plunge.
I also paid more than I was comfortable with. But I am EXTREMELY happy with the results and I am IN LOVE with my hair. Photos do not convey how utterly cute this cut is. And I even love DOING my hair now.
Please let us know if you end up finding a stylist you feel you can trust. (heart emoji)

What you call squishing, we call scrunching over here. I like to scrunch products in my hair, I used to do this while defusing it dry years ago, I prettymuch only air dry these days. I haven't scrunched my hair at all during my last 3 WAGs as I wanted to see what the products could do without any extra help.

I'm glad it's working for you, and making the start of your day easier. I've not tried out their process for taking care of curls as I don't think it would suit my hairs needs. I would probably never opt for a curly cut as I prefer a blunt hem lime. I've also seen comments about curly cuts making hair uneven, especially when straightened.
I don't ever straighten my hair, but if I did, I wouldn't be able to cope with jaggered ends. I've also seen lots of positive comments too from people who feel their hair is thriving with the method, you are also an example of this.
Some say you need to stick to it by the letter for it work, others have had success by taking elements they feel are beneficial for them. Every head of hair is different, we just need to do what works for our hair.
