Washing hair in braids- do you undo them?

I am suffering from a lot of shedding due to immense stress and breakage dues to i don't know what.
I wash my hair in 2-4 braids, i braid, unbraid, wash, braid, Unbraid to DC, wash.

I'm thinking if i don't unbraid my hair i will sig cut down on manipulation.
Do you think i will get my hair sufficiently clean?
Any thoughts?

Hey sweetwhispers, I think that is too much manipulation right there. I wash my hair in braids and I dont un-braid until the final rinse when I detangle after a DC. You can thoroughly wash and rinse just squeezing the water through your braids IMHO. I would definitely cut down on the braiding and un-braiding, especially if you're experiencing severe shedding and breakingerplexed ..... Have you tried doing an Aphogee treatment to stop the breakage?

I will def wash my hair in braids without undoing from now.
I was going to do an aphogee treatment, but they don't have it in stock where i live so i was going to do the elasta Qp Breakage control serum. But i have a lot of uni work to do at the moment so my hair is in kinky twists- i've been washing and i did the 2 min aphogee, but i'm going to take them out in 2 weeks.
I also tried to find the Queen Helene Garlic Shampoo. They don't have that here eithererplexed I read somewhere you can make your own, so i might do that as well.

That sounds like a good plan! Try the recipie boards for homemade garlic poos and conditioners.

Keep in mind that garlic shampoo will help stop shedding, not breakage. Shed hairs will have a tiny whitish bulb at the root. Broken hairs are usually short pieces with no bulb.

Hi I have cornrows braids and I don't unbraid when I wash and I wash my hair 2x a week and 1 of the wash is a conditioner wash and dc 2x week as well. I don't unbraid my hair until the night before I'll get them done. And I only comb my hair on the day I get them done. It's keep down alot of shedding and hair breakage, I hope that helps. Also, I use braids spray for moisturizer and infusium 23 leave in hair treatment with pro vitamin for strength and used the baggy method on my whole head.

This is exactly what I do, braid once-undo once..and to ensure that your hair is really clean wash hair in the shower and stand under the shower and just let the water go thru your hair b/4 you even apply shampoo to rinse as much dirt/debris/build-up as you can, then suds up..also it feels really good

I unbraid after each step, but my braids are super loose and don't go all the way to the end. I'm not convinced the conditioner is being applied even and thoroughly unless I take down each braid. It's also the only way to get all my NG.

I know this is an old thread of 4 years, but with fresh experiences, I am bumping.

I wash, dc, and moisturize condish in scalp /cornrow braids. I rinse and rinse and rinse to ensure that the products are rinsed thoroughly.

I usually start in the sections needed for my roller set. I found that if I cornrow instead of just braid I get less tangles. I wash, condish and dc (under the dryer) in the braids and when I get back in the shower to rinse out the dc that is when I take them down one at a time and throughly rinse each section and detangle. I don't rebraid I slightly twist and pin each section up in prep for my roller set.

I have my hair clipped in four sections that I release one at a time so no rebraiding or twisting at all. I'll do a quick messy bantu knot on a full section then secure it with a butterfly clip then go to the next section. I don't like the idea of not getting shampoo/conditioner to every single part of my hair.

i wish i knew how to cornrow *sighs*. i detangle first then..i wash and deep condish in 6 braids AND apply my leave in and seal with coconut oil..and i let them dry in the braids too (yeah. i'm lazy) and i rock a braid out all week.

I have never washed my hair in cornrows except when I was young and wore over 50 cornrows.

If wearing extension braid micros, I do not undo during the wash. If I put my braids in big plaits to wash, I undo at each step and comb through. I do not consider a lot of manipulation. I NEVER have to detangle my hair and I think pple who are so afraid of combing their hair end up manipulating it more during detangling. By combing my hair during each step using shampoo, condish, running water to provide slip, not only do I remove all shed hair, but I also finish my wash with hair that is fully detangled.

I do want to mention that I only work on one braid at a time. I undo, comb through and rebraid before moving on to the next one. And yes I do that during each step. Did I mention I don't ever have tangles that need removing? Also I don't lose more hair than normal.

I do everything in braids. And I don't take them down until I'm redoing or refreshing a style.

I go from cornrows to mini braids, back to cornrows to celie braids for a braid out. Then I cornrow it back up to wash, DC, dry, moisturize and seal. It has made being natural so much easier for me!

I find detangling to be a breeze since I finger detangle as I'm changing the style. I only change or refresh the style every 8-14 days (unless I'm doing an "out" style).

I only wear my hair out, 1-2 days at a time and then it's back to cornrows or mini braids.

I also noticed that I use less product when doing my steps in braids.
