what made you decide to no longer rely on stylist to do your hair?

I just like the idea of being a DIYer. I know what I want and how I want it done and if I can learn how to do it myself, then I'll do just that. Slightly off-topic, but once I master how to do my eyebrows, it's ovah! :cool2:
 
I moved to Atlanta to attend college in 2001. I had a bright idea to visit a hair stylist in the city...maybe for a touch up (this is when I was relaxed). I dont remember what she did but I remember feeling disappointed when I left and decided to never visit another hair stylist in Atlanta ever again. :nono:

In 2006 I returned to New York to be a bridesmaid in my friend's wedding. My mom convinced me in to visit her hair stylist to straighten my hair (was transitioning to natural at this point). The woman burned my scalp, filled my hair with grease and broke off way too much of my hair. She was not gentle with my hair AT ALL. I was so annoyed after years of caring for my own hair & being gentle with it. My mom apologized for talking me into it. That was the last time I visited a hair salon. I've been my own stylist ever since. :yep:
 
I'm curious to know what stylists think if they are reading this. I'm tempted to print this and anonymously mail copies to all my local black salons lol.
 
Practically going bald about 3 times. 1st with the gheri curl (bad mistake) 2nd with beauticians lying about what was being put in my hair (what type of relaxer lye or no lye) 3rd wearing braids too long ( not being told how to take care of them. Thank God for you ladies on this forum, you have helped me save my hair and now only I touch my hair.

I havent been to a hair dresser in a while but I went a month ago and they jacked up my hair :look:

I realized that I was critiquing them thinking of all the ways I could do it better. So I might as well do it myself, get a better result, and save money
 
Simply put, I got tired of having MY TIME wasted, the bad customer service and the know it all attitudes of the stylists. Doing my own hair has not been a walk in the park but one thing is for sure, I know how to take care of my hair better than any stylist!
 
I was with my stylist for 13 years until she moved to another state. :cry: After that I couldn't find anyone to do my hair and keep it healthy. I even went to some Dominican salons people raved about and my hair threw a tantrum. I went to Hair Styling by Joseph's (that's where my stylist was trained before she opened her own shop), and they charged me $130 for a touch-up, condition and trim. And the relaxer they used burned me.
 
I've gotten traction alopecia on two separate occasions because of stylists braiding my hair too tight before a weave install and the scalp scarring is permanent. :ohwell: The last time I went to a stylist was a little over two years ago. I had just BCed a couple of months ago and I was going to be a bridesmaid at my cousin's wedding. The day of the wedding, I went to get my hair done. The lady burnt my hair to a crisp. While it was nice and straight and pulled back into a high bun for the event, my hair smelled like burnt grass for a week, despite my repeated washing and conditioning. I ended up with heat damaged ends all over my head and it took over a year to get rid of them. Not to mention she

I just don't trust stylists with my hair anymore. Plus, my hair is its longest that it's ever been since I've been taking care of it myself. :yep:
 
I don't have money for it. Last time i to a salon they wanted to charge me extra and I wasn't fully natural yet. Also I'm scared cause of all the storys on here.
 
I agree with pretty much everything that has been posted. For me:

1. I don't want my son to have sit in the shop with me all day.
2. They take too long.
3. Even when I find a "good" stylist, she tends to rush through my hair depending on how many other clients are waiting.
4. Too much heat usage
5. Not gentle enough
6. Unpredictable results
7. I don't care for the products they use (namely sulfate shampoos). It takes me weeks of babying my hair to get my moisture level back.
8. I can trace just about each of my setbacks directly to a stylist.
9. Most of them can't rollerset my hair as well as I can.
10. The place that I did go where they can rollerset (a Dominican salon), now charges by hair length and because my hair is long they charged me $60 for a wash and set. No way, not ever again :nono:.
 
My reasons:


Too much heat, too many styling tools, not wanting you to know products they use, then the BS of turning you away from the mirror while ripping through your hair and cutting off too much hair.

I still remember back in the day when they use to let you face the mirror. I don't know what happened over the years but I agree. If you are doing my hair, I WANT TO SEE!!!
 
I haven't been to a stylist in like 9 years, but when I went to one in July to get a bun style for a wedding. I was there for hours, and the wash girl attempted to detangle my almost Bsl hair with a rat tail comb. I was like, uuhhmmm.... I have my own comb. And since I don't care for their products, I brought my own!
 
I was a college student, I had no money, I learned to do my own hair, and never saw the need to go back to a stylist once I started making money.
 
Time...and money, but mostly time. I used to go to a shop that was like an assembly-line and getting a touch up was an all day affair. I hated the waste of time and always watched their techniques closely. I eyed their products and soon discovered that since I'm ambidextrous it was no big deal doing my own hair. I even had one of those mirrors that hung around my neck so that I could see the back of my head. There have been a few missteps along the way but all-in-all its been a no turning back experience.
 
One more thing...I've met women with a teaspoon full of hair and cannot wash a style their own hair. That is the craziest thing I've ever heard.
 
My hair was treated like everyone else's! They never assessed my hair and used products accordingly, too much heat, getting passed over at the salon!, not knowing the products even perms they used on me, stylists not speaking english, no cosmetology degree, not using enough product, lack of salons in my college town, the list is endless and now that I know all I do about organic products and since I can give my hair the TLC it needs and it's obviously erred to do it on my own *snap*
 
After doing my own hair for the past 3+ years, I've been blessed to find 2 stylists I can really trust with my hair. They have long healthy hair, are really knowledgeable about hair health, are NOT scissor happy (only trim as needed and only the bare minimum), and are positive upbeat people. I've had my share of bad stylists which is why I did my own hair for so long. I must admit, My hair looks way better when i get it done versus when i do it myself. It's my little way of taking care of and pampering myself.
 
It was a combination of things. All these kids I have and their ripple effect on my wallet was a major factor. Plus. I was sort of transitioning(didn't claim it until a week before I BC'd. Then I didn't want to just go for flat ironing and have all that heat on my hair. I want to go to her for a super fiyah bone straight, flat iron once I reach two years of natural hair.
