Everyone's hair is very unique, so what's going on with my hair may or may not help. However, I don't mind answering your questions at all.
Q: Do you air dry, diffuse or use a hood dryer?
A: I either diffuse or use a standing hooded dryer. I prefer to diffuse because it allows me to stretch my hair and it's faster. If I am working on a project or studying, I'll sit under the hooded dryer. When I do that, my wash-and-go looks much shorter. If I try to stretch my hair after it's already been dried, I don't really get much stretch and it just shrinks right back up.​
Q: Does the gel leave a hard cast?
A:​
(1) When I do a MOUSSE/FOAM wash-and-go (I use The Doux Crazy Sexy Curl), then I don't get a hard cast. This wash-and-go will last me 2-3 days.​
(2) When I do a GEL wash-and-go, I use gels that leave a hard cast, and I purposely don't break the cast. This is because I want my wash-and-go's to last as long as possible. I have very fine hair, and every time I detangle it, I risk mechanical damage and breakage. So the longer my wash-and-go's last, the fewer times I have to detangle my hair, and the more hair I retain over the long run.​

Combinations I've been using repeatedly for my gel wash-and-go's include:​
(1) Ecoslay Jello Shot gel over The Doux Crazy Sexy Curl​
(2) Innersense I Create Hold over The Doux Crazy Sexy Curl​
(3) Ecoslay alone​
(4) I Create Hold alone​
Q: Do you get any flaking?
A: I hardly ever get any flaking. If I do, it's when I am too heavy handed with one of the combos above.

Other information that might be helpful:
  • I have 4b hair that is very dense (lots of hair strands) and very fine (each individual strand is very thin). I use to have highly porous hair, but now I think my hair has normal porosity (neither low nor high).
  • I was a straight-haired natural for a few years, thus my curl pattern in the picture is looser than it otherwise would be. I used to worry about this, but I have come to not care about this, LOL. I really enjoy wearing my flat-ironed hair. It's mid-back-length and eeeeeaaaaaasy to care for. So I'm not going to lie to myself and say I will stop flat ironing my hair for the sake of not loosening my curl pattern. I'm going to be flat ironing my hair for special occasions, when I need a break from doing my natural hair, etc.
  • When I apply styling product to my hair, I brush it through my hair with a "finger smoothing and detangling brush" such as the one shown below.

Q: How do you maintain or revive your curls?
A: I mainly use The Doux Crazy Sexy Curl to revive my curls. I love that product. Overnight I wear a hair sock to preserve my hair.

ONE HUGE KEY TO MASTERING MY WASH-AND-GO:
For my curl pattern, I will not have a great wash-and-go if my hair is not already "defined" before I apply gel. Meaning, however my how looks BEFORE gel is applied is going to strongly affect how it looks because gel doesn't deeply define MY hair. It might deeply define OTHER people's hair, but not mine.

What deeply defines MY hair is (1) proper protein-moisture balance, (2) deep conditioning, and (3) hydration (via saturating my hair with CONDITIONER [not deep conditioner nor leave-in] and then repeatedly flashing my hair under the shower water and squishing water into my strands).

To hydrate, I divide my hair in half and then each half into 3 sections for a total of 6 sections. I then "hydrate-by-repeatedly-squishing-water-into-conditioner-saturated-hair," section by section. I then rinse my hair in as-cool-as-I-can-stand water to close my hair cuticles to trap the water inside. Next, I apply a leave-in to each half of my hair, squishing after just one flash of cool water to help spread the leave-in throughout my dense hair. At this point, my hair is super defined. Gel simply gels this definition. Gel does not create too much more definition for MY hair. Before gel is applied, foam can help me get some additional definition, particularly when my hair is not well-defined.

ANOTHER HUGE KEY TO MASTERING MY WASH-AND-GO WAS TO LEARN THAT ONCE MY HAIR IS GELLED, I NEED TO PLACE MOST OF MY HAIR GOING/FALLING BACK BEFORE I DRY IT. I DO TAKE OUT A LITTLE HAIR AT THE FRONT, ON THE LEFT AND RIGHT, TO GO FORWARD. I ALSO TAKE OUT A LITTLE HAIR (FROM THE HAIR GOING BACK) THAT IS ON THE SIDES, AND I LET IT FALL TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDES THE WAY I WANT MY HAIR TO LOOK.

AFTER MY HAIR HAS DRIED LIKE THAT, MY HAIR KIND OF NATURALLY FALLS TO THE SIDES AND FALLS FORWARD. IF I DON'T START OUT WITH MOST OF MY HAIR DRYING TOWARD THE BACK, THEN I DON'T END UP LIKING MY WASH-AND-GO. THIS MADE ME THINK I DIDN'T LIKE WASH-AND-GO'S. I STUMBLED UPON THIS KNOWLEDGE AFTER WATCHING A VIDEO ABOUT HAIR PLACEMENT DURING WASH-AND-GO'S. IF I FIND IT, I'LL TRY TO REMEMBER TO SHARE IT WITH YOU.

My next goal is to learn how to do a little more with my wash-and-go by adding styling to it. The video below shows some styling:



I hope this helps even a little! Please let me know if I can answer anything else. It took me a very long time to master my wash and go. My advice is to HAVE FUN practicing. Journal on exactly what you do and rate the result. After some months you'll know what techniques give you hair you love. If an attempt fails, (a) I thank God I have hair and the means to care for it and to learn to style it, (b) ponytail or bun it, and (c) keep it moving! [heart]

Thank you for taking the time to give such a detailed reply. You've given me some great insights, there are definitely things that I can think about regarding my own hair and how it may respond to products and and drying methods when I get around to trying a WAG.

Two things I can see we have in common is that we both have a lot of hair and our strands are fine, so I do get what you mean when you say, what works for you, may not work for others. I also liked that you specifically refer to your hair during the explanation.

I've been looking into WAGs for a few weeks, looking at different routines, products, textures etc. I will attempt the things I think will work for me, an example would be to do my hair in small sections as there's so much of it, to make sure the product/s are spread evenly throughout my hair, I think that will make somewhat of a difference to the outcome for me. I envisage I will have insane shrinkage too, so I can think about stretching my hair if I feel like it.

I've been looking for one of those finger brushes you posted, I've seen them using something similar in the videos on Miche Insta page and in a couple of other videos. It's not essential though as I get great definition with a denman tbf, but I like the look of it :laugh:

Applied hair oil blend to roots and scalp in prep for braid takedown
Used VO5 give me moisture on length to remove braids

This evening/night:
Detangled with Skala Mais Cachos Creme Hidratante
 
Today, after rewetting my hair, I added some Skala Mais Cachos as a leave in to revive my WAG. I then added some Miche gel to foam mousse to give it some hold. I really liked the outcome, it's very hot for over here at the moment and extremely humid, my hair shrunk to above my shoulders, and frizzed up a bit at the back. I'm currently stretching it out in bands overnight

The mousse elongated my curls, I was looking more 2c//3a in areas where I would normally be 3c. The gel helped to restore my curls somewhat, and I liked the overall look.

The gel is exactly what I look for in a gel so far, waiting to see how it holds up with flakes. Great definition and pretty much frizz free.

I'd like to try this combo on a full WAG.
 
I finally used the affirm reconstructor that I bought months ago. It’s the strongest thing I’ve used in a long time (since aphogee two step but much less messy). Used it in conjunction with Kerastase nutritive and the chi thermal. Not crazy about the chi thermal anymore since it’s clearly been reformulated. It used to have a lot of silicones now it doesn’t. But I have a whole liter of the new formula :-(
