I thought it would be inspiring to remember what we used to do WRONG that kept our hair short and/or damaged. So, please confess a few of your hair sins with a pledge- NEVER AGAIN!

I need not to fall into my bad old hair HABITS, that kept me from having healthy hair.

:ohwell: I used to wear a set of micro braids over 4 months
:ohwell: I used to wash and condition my hair infrequently
:ohwell: I used to never used ANY type of leave-in moisturizers

1. used to never use a moisturizer:(
2. Would put relaxing cream in my hair by rubbing it in my hands and applying it like I do I moisturizer:eek: :(
3. Never used to deep condition:( .
4. Washed it infrequently:(

*I got highlights - bad move
*over processed hair - those darn hair dressers
*did not keep my ends moisturized

-hot curled my hair every single day (and sometimes several times in one day)
-went to sleep on cotton pillowcases with nothing protecting my hair
-brush out hardened brown gel rather than washing it out
-paid no attention to what i was putting in my hair - alcohol all over the place

One point i'd do quick "touchup" with flat iron EVERY day :(
Washed every 3 weeks or so
Hair would be dry as the desert, I thought breakage was the norm.
Gel and weave :D

did not wash my hair frequently:(
Curled my hair with curling irons EVERYDAY:mad:
never conditioned:(
slept on a cotton pillow case with nothing covering my hair:(
Would use hairspray, hair gel what ever I could lay my hands on to get that nice hard spiky do or some other crazy look:mad:

over processed by smoothing relaxer from root to tip.
Highlighted my own hair Feb 14, 2005
kept stretching my relaxer eventhough my hair was breaking.

Relaxing every 4 weeks, ng or no. Full relaxer application each time bec. my hair was still curly.... Flat iron daily.....self color disater, using a reg relaxer to rid a wn... U name it, I did it! And my hair was long w/ my relaxer,,,,shoulder length! I think my hair just does better w/ chemicals.

I would "treat" my hair once a month...with hot oil ( I taught I was doing something special)

I would use the wrong shampoo formulas for my hair (any ole' thang would do):ohwell:

I would put loads of grease with mineral oils and petroleum on my scalp:perplexed

I would use a curling iron on my dirty hair and wonder why it burned off!

I would get relaxers every 4-6 weeks and wonder why my hair didn't grow!

I would use products with drying alcohols:ohwell:

I put a permanent color on my freshly relaxed hair and went from mid back to no hair in approximately 2 months!

I didn't learn my lesson and got hilites when my hair was growing out, it didn't all fall out this time but my hair eventually turned the color orange, this is when I got braids and eventually cut out the orange ends...I never did deep treatments when I had hilites and never used color safe shampoos...ignorance is bliss!:)

I went to a hairdresser that pressed (and relaxed with a vigorol saying that it's not REALLY a relaxer), relaxed, pressed (again with the vigorol), curly permed and relaxed and colored it (without me knowing about the color) it again.

I would use sponge rollers and royal crown hair grease and wonder why my hair was always dry, looked nappy even though it was relaxed and never had any body

I would wash my hair once every 2 weeks or more if I couldn't get to the hairdresser.

I used those little combs and raked them through my hair.

I never deep conditioned my hair on my own.

I never used any product besides grease, hair polisher, pink lotion, and mousse.

I used electrical appliances with no protectant.

:nono:

Wow I don't think I ever did One Single thing right, to benefit my hair

I got my first relaxer when I was in the forth grade, because my beautician talked my parents into it. (she & her daughters had nice hair :ohwell: )
Cause she really didnt like pressing and dealing with me, and my sisters Nappy @#$ Hair. Anyway, I watched how she would apply the relaxer from Root to Tip, and of course our Nappy hair according to her, needed the SUPER. So eventually, I adopted the same ritual, but never used neutralizer, and since it never came out straight, I would follow that up with
1. Blowdrying followed with
2. A smokin pressing comb, off the kitchen stove, with plenty of greasy vaseline.
3. I hated washing cause that meant I 'd have to start ALLL over. There were times that I would even press dirty hair.
4. When I did wash, I was always in a hurry, and thought using a conditioner would take to long.
5. Thought using Pink Oil was the Truth!
6. Never covered my hair at night, and would
7. Hot curl my hair every morning, before school for that fresh look, &
8. Used fine tooth combs, because they kept the hair looking smooth.

I was actually blessed to have any hair on my head.
I Loved to look at longer hair, and would wonder how some girls were so so just Lucky to have hair that grew fast. And to think I was so proud cause I was doing my own hair.

One day I will have to get a photo album, because today my hair is healthy and past bra strap going for even longer. Now women look at me like its such a miracle to have long hair, and I know just how they're feeling. A lady in the salon asked me the other day if I had naturally curly hair, and I momentarily went blank, and had to regroup. Shows how a healthy routine can and WILL turn your hair completely around.

Man so many...
~going to the salon instead of taking care of my hair myself
~not deep conditioning EVERY wash
~using sponge rollers
~never using a leave-in
~using "black" products that were breaking my hair
~wearing cotton bandanas to bed
~using products with mineral oil
~pressing relaxed hair
~using Pink Lotion moisturizer
~relaxing every 6 weeks
~wrapping too tight

I've got a lot of hair repenting to do...LOL!

Here we go...

-Neva EVA used any moisturizers in my hair (I had one bottle of Doo Grow oil. I thought I was doing something)
-I never washed my hair myself (pure laziness)
-When to the Dominican salon every 2 weeks to get my hair washed.
-Stopped using deep conditioners (thought they were making my hair too oily...WHAT was I thinking?!?!?!
-Used a cotton bandana at night (to sop up the excessive "oil"..I'm so ashamed)
-Relaxed my hair every 5-6 weeks
-Each time I relaxed I got a jet black rinse (every 5-6 wks!)
-Neva did hot oil treatments

I have to stop here. There's more but the shame is too much!!! :lachen:

In three words: A thio-based relaxer! It was that stuff they sell at Sallys as a curl remover. I used that thinking I was so great....Only problem is that it broke off all my hair eventually.

When I was younger, I would use this relaxer from the Dominican Republic that had so much lye in it it would take the paint off a car (no joke). My hair was long & thick & I could blowdry it every day with no damage. After using that thio crap I can no longer blowdry and have to keep heat to a minimum.

Now it's mild lye based texturizers or relaxers for me.

I would brush and comb my natural hair everyday wet or dry.
I slept on cotton pillowcases.
When I washed and conditioned my hair I didn't put it in sections. I thought that all the hair that I was losing was "shed" hair and was gonna come out anyway. :nono:

cotton pillowcases
constant weaving :nono:
products with mineral oil and petro
flat iron everyday
Never moisturized
Black gel:barf:
Hairstyles that included hard hair
French rolls with bobby pins that killed my scalp
Relaxed my hair every 5-6 weeks

1. I use to put relaxer all over my hair

2. I use to relax the same day and the put exstensions in

3. I use to wear my extensions 6 months or longer.

4. I would wash my hair like once a month

5. No moisture

6. Heat, curling irons blow dryers

5.Fusion hair extensions

6. Micro Mini braids.

1. Let stylists do what they wanted:mad:
2. When I pressed I would have the hot comb almost in flames!!
3. I thought it was normal to have a comb full of hair and a floor covered with broken ends!
4. Washed my hair infrequently

Aphogee Treament, poo, reconstructor, keratin & green tea
Profectiv relaxer, breakfree, megamoisture

Ladies:

I have a wall of shame. Here are just a few of the highlights...

1) Relax my hair every 4 weeks (later, it was every 6 weeks, but still...)
2) Curl my hair every day or every other day
3) Rollersets left in for 2 weeks (w/o washing) and using the curling iron over the dried setting lotion to "revive" the drooping curls (I know I should be ashamed)
4) Getting braids/microbraids and then not moisturizing at all or sometimes using oil sheen (a poor substitute for moisturizer).
5) One summer getting microbraids (not taking care of them as said above), not detangling at all before washing my hair when I removed them, and then getting cornrows put in two times right after removing the microbraids (oh yeah, and I didn't detangle before washing after removing the first set of cornrows either)
6) Letting hairdressers chop off 2 inches every 6-8 weeks, when my hair wasn't that uneven or in need of a trim
7) Letting a hairdresser put a super strength relaxer in my hair and leave it on for 30 minutes (BURN CITY, BURN CITY) (No one's hair needs super strength relaxer IMO, I don't care if you have 4F hair)
8) Infrequent washing (every 2 weeks), not conditioning at all after washing, and infrequently or not moisturizing my hair at all. Sometimes used heavy grease.
9) Constant use of the blowdryer and hot curlers
10) Letting hairdressers use hot combs, curlers and flat irons heated on the marcel stove, when I had relaxed hair and hearing the grease and heat from the irons sizzle my hair, frying it (Hey, I didn't know better)
11) LUSTER'S PINK OIL MOISTURIZER, OIL SHEEN (ETC.) (THIS IS THE WORST PRODUCT OF ALL TIME).

Unfortunately, I could probably go on, but I think you ladies get the point

ALL WRONG:

Overlapped with my relaxer
Relaxed every 6 weeks
Never used water unless washing
Used hard bristle brushes
Constant combing just to feel a comb in my scalp
Used grease
Slept on cotton pillows and used cotton scarves
Wore tight ponytails

NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN!!!!!

-using Pink Oil
-sleeping on cotton pillows
-getting hair relaxed every 6 weeks
-letting stylist trim off my growth (I could not figure how why my hair wouldn't grow or look shorter after a salon visit.
I actually stop letting stylist trim my hair before I frequented this board)
-blowdrying every week
-using bad, drying products
-used sponge rollers
-washed every 2 weeks until my scalp said no....I can't go one week because my scalp would itch
-not deep conditoning everyweek
-thought protein conditioners were the same as moisturizing ones
-not keep my hair moisturized
-used the curling iron every morning.
-not wrapping my hair in a silk scarf

-would blow dry hair every single day
-putting in own relaxers not knowing what I'm doing. It would come out half relaxed and half still full of new growth
-never using leave in conditioners
-Brushing hair real hard with hard stiff bristles
-hot curling every other day, now I don't even remember the last time i hot curled my hair(been years)
-using stripping shampoos like pantene and VO5

*when I was natural I used to use a "pick"(lol thats what I called it) to comb out my hair and would pull out globs of all my lovely beautiful hair and thought it was absolutely normal!!!

*washed hair once a month

*But greased it with Always Hair grease Errrrrday

*When I began to relax, my ends broke off, I was freaked out but didn't know what to do about every time I touched my ends they would pull out as I touched them so I just put it in a ponytail. I also thought the way to combat breakage was to flatiron it out and all the hair that continued to fall out, just keep combing all my hair until all the breakage stopped coming out.

*When I began to relax I used to flatiron everyday

*Never adding moisturizers to my ends

*Using Pink Oil*

*Using hard-bristle brushes*

*The oh so lovely, if your hair is itching then it needs more grease so applying more grease on top of grease!!*

*Relaxin err six weeks*

:wallbash:

i did everything wrong for almost two years and my hair just kept getting shorter and shorter... it was insane!!

-i relaxed every 6 weeks when i first got a perm, but i still had healthy hair because i was still in Haiti and we did lots of natural hair treatments...

*THEN! when i went to 8th grade then to high school, i started doing my own hair and everything went down hill from there

-Did not trim my hair for months! and did not do anything to keep my ends good either
-i once spent a month without washing my hair
-during the whole month, i still kept curling my hair or flat-ironing it everyday
-wore cotton scarves to bed
-did some deep-conditioning treatments, but not often
-revived my hair for a while then went right back to doing it all wrong
-did not wear a hat at practice, or wore a cotton hat, in Miami sun for 2 hours
-then finally, when i started going to the hair salon, towards the end of 9th grade, my stylist would trim my hair EVERY TWO WEEKS! finally i was like u know what? i CANNOT have gotten split ends in 2 weeks and i stopped going
-brushed my hair with hard bristle brushes
-Then when i started taking care of my own hair, i blowdried too much and had to sweep my floor everytime i finished.
-didn't moisturize my hair enough
-I then became scissor-happy... and trimmed every 6 weeks for MONTHS! it was insane

i was using mostly the right products and i still have a bunch of them, BUT it's the technique that was all wrong.
