What's the Deal w/Frizzy Ends???

The Bun Master
The only time my ends are really straight are when done professionally  . I'm sure it's the 2000 degrees of heat that force them to comply, but I'm wondering what it signifies. I flat ironed my hair the other week and as soon as I combed it the ends puffed up. Any clues?

i was just about to say the same thing as Armyqt... put some type of oil on your ends and roll the ends with a roller. hth!

My ends get darn right frizzy, too. I can't imagine that they would be dry since I baby them and moisturize them so much but I haven't tried the jojoba oil...I think I will.

I oil them daily and they feel fine, but it's like they need a ton of heat to get straight and the rest of my hair requires very little. The last thing I want to do is let the iron rest on them for ten years to get them to smooth. Do you think ironing w/the jojoba oil on them would help? Kinda like Irresistible would do w/the coconut oil and shea butter, letting the oil kinda burn off?

After I wash my hair, I use 911 Emergency leave in for dry, damaged hair on my ends and then coat them with jojoba oil. My ends come out nice and smooth.

Have you tried experimenting with different leave ins or moisterizers? Some tame my hair better than others and make it "sit down."

Seng, do you air dry?

My hair frizzes up when it's either still damp when I remove the rollers, or when the ends need to be chipped a little.

Also, I have heard that it's never a good idea to use any type of heating instrument when you have added oil to your hair; I was told it's like frying your hair in bacon grease. That visual stuck with me :smirk:

Sengs, I just got the MNT daily leave in spray and it is fantastic for making the hair soft and laying it down. One of the main ingredients is a cone. I'm thinking this will help smooth the hair down. Combined with the oils, it should do the trick for ya. It's only a couple of bucks @ Sally's and it's worth a try vs. damaging your ends with heat.

I can testify to this product because right now my airdried hair is smooth as a baby's bottom on the ends. And basically all I've been using this and oils on the length.

See I feel this way too. My ends feel wonderful in any other style, they even feel fine when I iron. But the minute I comb them out they double in size! I just don't get it. I'm thinking maybe more serum focused on them might help too :ohwell: . My hair has a tendency to get stringy if I use too much oil.

I was going to recommend using a serum instead of an oil. I know my hair can't have any oil in it when I'm wearing it straight. NTM serum and Alfaparf Semi di Lino work well for me.

Glad to see that I am not the only person who has this problem. I have chopped off so many inches from fustration. In the last 3 months, the only solution I have found is to pamper my ends.

* I add conditioner to the ends first when I condition my hair.
* When I rollerset I lay the leave in on extra thick on the ends. I have found the qpelasta mango butter, or any kind of butter with some essential fatty acids before I roll the hair works really well. Last night I only used Olive Oil Moisturizing Lotion after I did a conditioning wash and though the ends came out smooth, I have seen them smoother. so tonight I plan to lay it on extra thick again. The rollers are definitely the finishing touch--I think it acts like a sealer.

I might try the 911 Emergency leave in, I like their ingredients.

THE BOTTOM LINE: ENDS ARE HIGH MAINTENANCE.

You ladies are all so helpful!!!

@Mariaat-- Okay, I'm getting the Jojoba Oil since I see yet another vote for it! ;)

@Lorraine-- I think part of it is the nature of my hair b/c it's so freggin' fluffy. But to answer.... NO! I'm a loyalist! Lacio or death! Since this was a flat iron I just used a heat protectant, Lacio and Humectress as leave-ins.

@Webby-- I thought that too :ohwell: , but Irris had the most beautful hair. Well in this case I did the ponytail method under the hood and then ironed it out. The only time my ends really smooth nicely is if I wrap it, but then it's all flat and seems to have half the body. :ohwell:

@Army-- I'm not a big MNT fan, but I can give the spray a try. :)

@Tai-- I've never used any serum before (I know  ) , so I was thinking my new purchase of Semi Di Lino might come in hand for this purpose.

@bajan-- I know that's right!!!! I was thinking it just needed to be cut too, but whenever I have had my hair done professionally I get compliments and they don't find my ends to be a problem at all. They give me a regular trim and that's that. I put conditioner on my ends regularly along w/oil. For rollersetting though I try to keep my products light. Maybe I'll put some Elucence on my ends this evening as I rollerset. It might be light enough. I can say that w/rollers as opposed to the iron I get double thick ends as opposed to triple thick ends that I get w/the iron! :ohwell: So the roller does help them lay down a bit more.

I don't really have the frizzy problem, but my hair will do it if, like Webby said, it is not fully dry. I think you should try adding a serum with your leave-ins the next time (paying special attention to the ends) then sit under the dry and see if that makes a difference when you flat iron.

Try something heavy on the ends like elasta qp curl wax when you flat iron --I really like it and its not greasy at all. You can put a little oil or serum on first

I have the exact same problem and it's so frustrating to me. I just purchased the NTM Serum, so hopefully next time I flat iron I won't have the same problem.

Never heard of this... I don't even think I have sample and I thought I had all the samples. Does it feel waxy? I think something w/some weight might work too :yup: .

Nope Cincy, not alone... I try to arrange it w/my fingers, but sometimes you gotta comb!

when i used to use the curling iron, i used this and it did work. It made the ends seal together. I think heat does work, but the harder challenge is when you keep heat out of your regimen how to get those ends well tamed.

It's not really waxy as such its like a thick grease but it doesn't feel greasy on your hair. (My sister turned me onto it.) Its about $5 for a 7oz tub and it smells really nice too.
Sally's dont stock it. At least out here they dont.

BUFFALO, Do you think that it can be used without heat?? Do you think it would work with rollers?

In addition to missing moisture, isn't this also a sign that your ends need clipping?

Yeah, that's always possible, I thought so too in my case, but I have cut 40% of my hair off from Oct to January and the problem returns. So if there are no split ends, I would not advocate cutting. No matter what I am not cutting my hair again. I will moisturize every hour first because I see that the problem is not damage but dryness.

I have always had this problem. It doesn't matter how much I cut off , my ends are frizzy when I do my own hair.
I alternate with using Jojoba on my ends or NTM serum. Works like a charm.
I sometimes blow dry with round brush that ends it too.

I have no idea it says to apply to dry hair before styling. It also says that it is a moisture resistant formula that prevents curl reversion. Maybe you could try it on damp hair..I really dont know.

Satin cream press LOTION (not the grease) used to make my ends come out really nice with a roller set. they were super straight..it just stinks !!

Thanks Mrslee!!! I wore the bonnet halfway, just on the back.

ITA w/Bajan and Sylver. My ends weren't split, but I trimmed them anyway and still the same issue. I think I need a product adjustment, b/c like I said no stylist has ever thought anything was wrong w/them and they have no issue getting them straight :ohwell: . I'm no flat ironing master so that too could be an issue, b/c I don't want to clamp down on them too hard or use a bunch of extra heat.

HOW COULD I FORGET?? The 2 things that do prevent frizzy ends when I air dry in rollers have been
* Nexxus Headress
* Mango Butter mixed with Essential Fatty Acids (unless my hair gets wet in the rain).

Honestly, I think it is the level of heat used when doing a rolllerset or using a flat iron that smoothes the ends. So I think the heat is the missing link when airdrying a roller set. And high heat with a good leave in is the missing link when I sit under my hood dryer. I mean the ends are tucked under other laps of hair so maybe the heat does not get to them.

Hey, sorry you are expeeriencing frizzy ends....I know when my hair is not dried completely that the ends end up frizzy, I had to find a solution to this and I believe a good leavin is the key..........serums help seal the mixture for me, but when I would go to the salon they used this stuff ( Rusk Smoother) that really helped turn my hair around, my ends are smoother, healthy and bluntly cut, grows out that way to, so:

1. a good cut ( you have that)

2. styling option that smooths out hair ( rollersetting is for me, when I airdry my hair m it always looks frizzy, wavy, or curly ( if I do a bun, the ends frizzy and curl up, never tried air drying rollers cause it would take toooolong and I have a hounded dryer that I cant resist, only if its really hot and sticky out) Anyway, I am rambling....

3. a great Leave in............Rusk Passionfruit Smoother has done right by me for about 4 years now, I love it...I tried Lacio a few months ago and I didnt find the same detangling qualities, but I'll have to give it a try again...so I can be sure)

Maybe when you rollerset you can sit in the dryer under medium heat for 15 minutes or so, then airdry the rest.....or wrap them with thoses papers ( I used those along time ago, it was kinda hard to do for me but I thought they helped with flatter ends. HTH
