I am fed up of going in circles with my hair. I have always believed that I could grow my hair relaxed to waist lenghth! Ha!! I know my hair could grow to waist length because I have relatives who grew their hair (natural) to waist length.

Well, I put in effort to grow my hair long and healthy then some hairdresser would jeopadise my 4 to 6 months effort when I get a relaxer. Then I would start over again and after 4 to 6 months another hairdresser would mess up my efforts. This has been going on for years and I am absolutely fed up of going in circles.

My hair is 3.5 inches away from brastrap after growing it for approx.20 months. Considering all the major set backs it has not done badly. But I am pi$$*d off b'cos I just noticed A BIG PATCH where my hair broke off to about 3 inches long in my crown area!! Luckily enough, I have been taking pictures of my progress and I would be updating my album soon.

I would not be getting a relaxer again so nobody would have a chance to JEOPARDISE my efforts again. Basically I am officially transitioning from this month (November 2005). And I believe that in about 5 to 6 years from now I would have natural waist length hair!!

Who else is fed up of going in hair circles?! I am looking forward to reading your posts.

I haven't been going in any circles, but would like to ask are you sure that your hair has broken off and has not been burn off, I don't know if your hairdresser ever used barrel curlers on your hair but that could have been the case. Also stand strong on what you believe when it comes to your hair if you didn't reeeally want a relaxer you could have just left, it's your money and I believe everyone needs to start making sure that the hairstylist give us what we want and what's the best thing for our individual strands.

Exactly...2 hair dressers ago, my hair in the bad mid section was completely burned off, luckily I stop going to her and my hair has grown in nicely. I'm sorry that you have to go through circles because incompetent stylists. Congrats on your decision to go natural and good luck.

Joining LHCF was a result of me being sick of going around in circles... I had the same experience, my hair being chopped off every few months and watching all my progress just being snipped away... and when it wasnt that, it was my fault, doing trims every 6 weeks but even then, I'd have a lot of growth left.

i hope everything works well for you. Just keep taking really good care of that section and it will grow nicely :)

Brandy i'm sorry about your experience, i completely understand because i've been there. i've had hairdresser leave a relaxer on my head for one hour, i lost hair from different sections of my head due to relaxer burns. Even though i know how to texturize my own hair with knowledge gathered from this forum, i've had to transition due to diffrent textures and breakage issues. You have my support! hang on in there.

Thank you ladies for your support and advice.

Hi Den1,
Thanks for your support. You are really doing well with your transitioning and you are one of my hair inspirations. I will pm you often for advice as I transition; happy transitioning.

Brandy, stop by my album, i've got a few tips that could help you out. PM me as often as you like, i'm happy to be of help. As for my transitioning stages, my hair having bad hair days, my 4b hair seems so dry and coarse and my scalp is giving me issues. I'll survive i'll sort it soon. Anyway, welcome to the transitioners club.

Brandy like many of us it seems that it's your stylist that is sabotaging you. Have you ever considered self-relaxing ?

Well Brandy Im with you. I never got what I wanted froma stylist nor form my own efforts. I have had NEAR waist length (maybe 1 inch above) hair before and had it for years until one day I decided to relax. Now the longest it gets is bra strap. Im sure I could eventually reach waist length getting relaxers but It would probably take me years when you combine combating breakage, moisturizing, relaxing, trimming, bunning, etc When I could just let my hair rest and do its own thang. The new growth is thicker healthier and shinier and its growing in way faster. I cant wait until I have bra strap kength natural hair. I wish you all the luck in whatever you do but I think youve made the right decision to transistion.

Hi DahomeyAhosi,
I have thought of self-relaxing but I have a sensitive scalp with thick wirery hair so self-relaxing would not work for me.

Hi beyondcute,
Thank you. Yes I do believe it's the right decision.

For me I had the problem of a SHS. She did my relaxers and doobies well and my hair was fine as far as that was concerned but she cut it so much-without asking she was trimming, and I didn't even need it! So I let my mom do my touch-ups which went well but she started to give me the run around about doing them. I taught my self to do my own relaxer with help from Shamboosie's book. I had been doing them since July 04. I decided to transition because I am tired of the chemicals and I really adore natural hair in all its forms. I think you are making a good choice. We're here for ya!

This is PRECISELY why I refuse to allow a stylist, or anyone really, to "do" my hair, especially my touchups. If you ever decide that you don't want to transition and want a touchup, consider touching your own hair up using the 3-section method. It cuts down on the probability of underprocessing and it helps you prevent overlapping too. Happy Hair Growing!

I was fed up and moving in circles for 10years...before i found this board. I always wanted long hair but i didn't know the proper way of taking care of it, not to mention the frequent trims by my stylist. I've always been shoulder length for my whole life. At any rate, i have decided that i will not cut my hair until i reach my goal (bsl). Actually I reached my mini goal of Armpit a few weeks ago and i did a small dusting. then when i reach bsl i will do another dusting. and continue to dust maybe every 6weeks, until my hair thickens at the ends. I have also accepted the fact that the first time/year that i reach bsl, my hair won't be at it's thickest or the most beautifullest. but ive decided that i have to reach the goal first, and then groom it/grow it for another 6months so that it'll be thick and lush as well as long. People always say they want long hair but it gets chopped off at the first sight of a split end or uneven length. Just let it grow.... My hair is naturally layered and i love it....... But at any rate, dont let anyone come between your goal. Just set your rules and make everyone abide by them.... U can certainly request a mild relaxer and for them not to cut your hair...just speak up. And i wish you well in your hair journey!

Sincerely,
A woman who's fed up with being fed up.....
