Who has gone completely with natural products, no EDTA, polysorbates, methylparabens etc... and have had success switching over and not falling back on chemical laden products?
Has your hair thrived, any set backs or about the same in health in growth as when you used regular products?
If you are all natural what are your staple products and regimen? TIA

I've been using all natural products for a while. I love my aloe Vera juice, glycerine and distilled water spritz and castor oil to seal. I love using yogurt and honey or avocado, egg, banana and olive oil as a prepoo. I love darcy's botanicals and Aubrey organics conditioners and I LOVE my swastik shikakai shampoo bar.

I definitely haven't had any set backs using all natural products and ingredients but I can't say whether they are better than non natural products. All i know is that my hair hates cones and mineral oil and LOVES a prepoo.

I only use salon products when I wear my hair straight which is only a few times a year. I use Bee Mine, Giovanni, Aubrey Organics, Curl Junkie, and Kimmay's leave in.

I think its made a difference in my hair. My hair feels moisturized and not coated.

I have thought about switching to all natural products. When I think about it.... thats all I am using right now.

I use all natural products except for my shampoo. Natural shampoos seem to dry my hair out. I use elucence MB shampoo and my hair seems to like it a lot.

i personally haven't but naptural85 on youtube seems to have done this successfully and her hair is beautiful!

I am not completely natural with all my products but I have found that making my own conditioners with items I have at home and oils actually work (for me) better than the store brought conditioners and it's cheaper. Some of my favorite ingredients to mix and match are honey, yogurt, eggs, mayo, avocado, EVOO, EVCO, Castor oil, Rose Water, Shea Butter, Banana and Molasses, Cocounut Milk, Coconut Creme (various recipes). I have also been experimenting with flax seed gel. I've also been making my own Shae Butter hair smoothies and using them on my twists in place of Shae Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie.

I don't know if I will ever go all natural in my product use but I am finding that natural products are giving me great results at a much cheaper price. Hope this helps.

I do, I use Aloe & Chamomile Detangling Conditioner (sometimes), Shampoo Bars, Yes To Tomatoes, Giovanni, DIY Shea Avocado Whipped Body & Hair Butter, Jane Carter and a Neem & Green Tea Leave-In Conditoner...no set backs here.

Thanks for starting this thread I am curious as well. I started going all natural, but occasionally use some cones and petroleum based products.

I do for the most part and I feel that my hair is healthier for it especially since I am cone sensitive.

I do use Suave coconut conditioner when I go swimming. I used it a lot more when I was cowashing regularly but I go about 2 weeks now without washing. Oh and sometimes I use lustrasilk deep conditioner...but all of my stylers and moisturizers and leave ins are natural.

With the exception of using Suave's Almond and Shea Butter conditioner, HE Hello Hydration, and HE LTR Leave-in, I pretty much use natural products. I use Aloe Vera juice/gel, shea butter, oils (e.g. coconut, EVOO), and products from Oyin Handmade. I see a big difference in the quality of my hair. It's thicker and more moistened.

I'm half natural half regular products now. I tried to go all natural before but it got really expensive and I couldn't keep that up. I like my regimen now and it's working for me.
The amount of conditioner I have to use for CW and leave in I would go through a bottle of AOHR in 1 week or 2 easy so I haven't figured out how to go completely natural and not break the bank. I'll give it a another try and see if I can swing it just for the hair and health benefits.

I have done a few all natural treatments with excellent results but it was time consuming. I can make herbal tonics to replace commercial conditioners but using a commercial conditioner is much faster.

1. wash hair with raw African black soap.
2. Rinse
3. Apply hibiscus tonic instead of conditioner. Do not rinse out.
4. Apply shower cap and cover with towel for 45 minutes to an hour
5. Rinse ONCE with 3 tbpsn acv diluted in 1/2 gallon distilled water.
6. Rinse with cold water until water runs clear.
7. Moisturize hair with aloe vera gel, seal with coconut & castor oils.
8. Twist and bantu knot.

NOTE: The hibiscus tonic was made from 500 ml filtered water plus 40 dried hibiscus flowers in hot, NOT boiling water, for 10 to 15 minutes. Let cool and strain before using on hair.

I guess I am not quite 100% natural products yet.

My anti dandruff shampoo is full of chemicals - I am in the process of trying out natural remedies so I may be scratching this out.

My rinse out/ detangling conditioner(suave tropical coconut) is not all natural, but not too bad either. Unless I find something nearly as wonderful, I won't part with this.

My heat protectant in not natural by any means. It's nothing but cones. Again, unless I find some wonderful and natural this will have to stay. I only use it from time to time( every 2-3 months) anyway.

So I guess I am about 97% natural products.

Eta, my hair has not suffered one bit due to the transition to natural products. I have seen nothing but good results. Now....not every natural product works for me. I still have to be selective.

Lucia do you live near a Trader Joe's? You know their Nourish Spa is only 3 dollars. The alternative is to dilute the AOHSR since it's very thick anyway. But that conditioner doesn't have any surfactants in it anyway so you wouldnt need to use that on your scalp. Have you tried "washing" your scalp with acv? I use that on my scalp throughout the week because I can't put conditioner on my scalp and it keeps the itchies away. That way, you could just take the co-washing out of your regimen, wash with acv and then use natural leave ins. Not sure if you've tried that before but my hair does well with just a water rinse and my shea butter mix as a leave in. Unfortunately, I love Vo5, Suave, and HE for their smells so I use those daily lol

thanks for the tips. Yes I do the diluted ACV rinses to clarify b/c I still use eco styler gel on my hair regularly and it keeps my scalp clean. I'll check out trader joe's but whole foods is nearby. I need the CW cause my hair loves moisture and will get dry if I don't CW.

All the products I use in my hair are from the Shea Moisture line which I believe are all natural. I have been using the line for about two or three months now. Around the time I added color to my hair I started using the products in search of something to aid in moisture retention.

I use the Black Soap Shampoo and Condish, the masque, the smoothie, the milk and the shea butter spray. My hair has flourished with the use of these products. I tried to be a mixologist but it was an epic fail. I shampoo and condition every one to two weeks. I don't use any gels and I try not to get any product on my scalp so that I don't have to wash my hair as often. I use the masque after I have towel dried my hair until it's damp and not soaking wet. I use about a table spoon of the masque and distribute that through my hair until I don't see any more of the product sitting on my hair. I have a really dense head of hair so I might be using more than most people. Then I do the same with the smoothie. Lastly I twist my hair using the milk. Once I take out my twist I use the spray for additional shine.

It probably takes me a total of an hour to an hour and a half to do all of that. I don't twist my hair every night. I just tie it up with a scarf and fluff it out in the morning. Because it's thoroughly moisturized I don't have to wet it to fluff it out. Just a few strokes of my fingers and it's fro-licious.

Even with color in my hair it is still supple and touchable.

Please list your staple natural products and esp what you use for styling? TIA

I have been using BFH and Hairveda cons to cowash. When I shampoo I use Elucence MB. I have been using grapeseed oil, evoo and castor oil to seal or oil my scalp. I am moisturizing with QB BRBC or Shea moisture curly milk. Thats pretty much it for now.

yes I only use natural products and I love it because I see a difference.
I copy and paste an old post I wrote on another thread about my experience with natural products and the only possible setbacks I can imagine, now I can't imagine natural products causing any damage, only benefit:

labels in natural products don't tell you that

- soap based shampoos only work well with filtered water or acv rinses because otherwise the saponins stick to the dirt of your hair and scalp and to the minerals in the water, giving you tangles, dull hair and buildup (EDIT: this is not the case of other surfactants that are not plain soap, such as cocobetaine)

- butters and waxes, unless mixed to oils in the right percentage for your hair (which is different for everyone), could cause buildup, dryness and sabotate your detangling sessions (this is for homemade mixes as commercial products tend to be balanced)

- protein ingredients are not supposed to be left in, and they need to be followed up by moisture even if the brand doesn't provide a "2 step"

- some soaps have a too high ph that will raise your cuticles

- glycerin doesn't work well for everyone and it doesn't work well in all weathers, and so do other humectants (honey, castor, big quantities of aloe which also makes my hair hard, agave). In fact, I keep noticing that many of those succesful well known natural conditioners/products don't have it

- natural shampoos are different: some clean well, others don't

- sodium chloride is salt, some natural products give an amazing performance because of it, but overtime if it is in a big quantity in the product (used as a thickener) it might become corrosive.

-------------------------------

I add today to my list:

- pay attention to citric acid if you are mixing your own products, I tended to use too much and it was sort of stripping, I prefer ACV now. Products are ph balanced but when mixing I always use ph strips.

- some so called natural products have sodium hydroxide in them

- my hair doesn't like powders and yogurt

- I never mix different proteins in the kitchen or out of the kitchen or experiment with protein products. I am good with Aubrey Organics GPB

- If you are mixing oils and waters/juices and you don't want bad bacteria, always use preservatives (like phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, optiphen...): antioxidants and tea tree oil are not preservatives.

---------------------------------

LOL now, finally and after all these adventures, my hair can rest. I like it so much that I could never go on without at least some natural products.

I try to stick to all-natural products for most of my hair care needs, but I do fall back to "regular" brands/products when it comes to conditioners. Because I need so much to moisturize, condition and detangle, I end up going through much more than I care to spend more than $8 on.

This is a really good thread, because I do go back and forth when it comes to natural vs "other" for my hair....

I use CV shampoo bars, butters, oils, aloe, and coconut milk. I use Garnier Fructis right now for co-washes, not sure how natural those ingredients are, but I only co-wash once every 2 weeks. The other non-natural products I have are my wrap foam and heat protectant for my rollersets. My hair is definitely more moisturized now than it was with the store bought products I was using before.

I'm not all natural even though I want to be for health purposes. I tried and my skin loved it....but it wasn't working for my grass. :nono:

I had to go half and half. Natural Poos, pre-poos, oils, and some products. Regular condish and some products. So far it's going well.

Suggestions for natural hair gels besides aloe vera, I'm lookin or somthing with max hold similar to ecostyler gel, anyone?

all natural except for my heat protectant that I use when blow drying.

qhemet line
Oyin - leave-in and pomade
Darcys for twisting cremes and gel
bear fruit hair condishes

black soap to wash
bentonite clay to clarify

no set backs from going natural:drunk:

can anyone recommend a proven natural heat protectant?

I would be if not for CJ Daily Fix conditioner, everything else is natural. I recently stopped using Eco Styler. I didn't like the way it made my hair feel even though it's a good gel.

Right now it's:

Shampoo: diluted Dr. Bonner's
Conditioner: Trader Joe's Nourish Spa
Leave In: KCKT, Purabody Sapote Oil Lotion
Moisturizer: QB Burdock Root Butter Cream
Gel: AO B5 Design

all natural except for my heat protectant that I use when blow drying.

I would like to know that too. I never straighten my hair, but I know I will blow dry it straight at a certain point and haven't found anything that's 'cone free. I think I will bite the bullet and use a silicon based product. Its not worth being 100% natural at the expense of the health of my hair. I do use a sulfate free shampoo weekly so I will be able to totally wash it out.

@Lucia I've heard some great things about Kiss My Face gel. It is supposed to have great hold. I have yet to try it but I plan on doing so in the near future. I embedded the link to the site.

In regards to the thread, I'm trying to go Naptural85 natural...I just ordered the terressentials mud wash and for the last 5 weeks I've only used shea butter and different oils on my hair and have kept my hair in mini-twists...it seems to be thriving. I really want to keep it as simple as you can get. No more than 3 products and PSing to the goal line.

ETA: Here is a Youtube vid with a natural who uses and loves this product. HTH
