Why, Oh Why....(vent)

I'm in the post office today standing in front of a woman with a gorgeous head of 3a-ish curls, apl unstretched. Her hair was simply stunning (..think Cichelle with her curls fingercombed out...) and she was dressed in a casual yet neat and clean fashion. I hear someone call "Mom" and a young girl runs over.

Her daughter (...appeared to be about 10...) has all of 2 inches of some of the driest hair I have ever seen on a human head!! I think her hair might have been a 4a with proper care, but it was way too damaged to figure it out!! It was so dry, flaky and tangled, the ends looked almost like it had been singed in actual fire! Then someone tacked on a 12" cheap yaki weave on top of that mess and tried to slick it all down with half a can of gel

To top it all off the girl had on a dress that was 3 sizes too small (she was a plump girl) and she smelled of B.O and urineWTH??
How can you let your child walk around looking like that?? If you look decent, can't you make sure your child does also??

Aww, that's so sad! I absolutely hate when I see stuff like that. That is SO selfish on the mother's part!

That is so sad some mothers just don't have a clue. My boys actuallylook better than me, not to say I run around in dingy sweats but If I have to sacrifice then I will for my children.

Yes i hate to see that when the adults look good but the children is a different story. I remember this old doobie shop i used to go to on sat.days there will be women DRESSED like they going to a club or something just to get a $15.00 doobie 8am in the morning. This one lady i always run into had nice BCBG jumper suits really nice throw on stylish clothes to wear. Well on sat.day i run into her again she had on gucci sneakers (very cute that had orange suede on the side) that match her wilson suede orange jacket( i saw the tag when she sat down) and her daughter came with these HIGH WATER jeans..beat up nike sneakers like she had them for years. A shirt that was suppose to be white but look like someone tried to bleach it but it just had a dingy look to it than make matter worst a holy jacket that came to her wrist. I see where the money is going in that familyerplexed.

Exactly...most mothers I know would. I'm not talking about the girl's hair not being long, or stylish. Her hair looked straight up unhealthy and unclean

If mom knew enough to wash her own body and hair, I just can't understand why she wouldn't make sure her child did at least as much.

I see this all the time and it makes me so mad!!! My mom always told us that we represent the family and she made sure we always looked our best. I drives me crazy to see mothers takes the best care of their hairs and spend all sorts of money to take care of their own hair and won't make sure their daughter's hair is taken care of as well. Perm's be looking like they be stretching for about 3 months; it's awful!!!!!

Oh, this is so sad. It's ok to see well groomed kids with their mother who may be a little tired looking. You know the kids are being well taken care of and they are the priority, but when it's the other way around, that's just wrong.

I remember once when I was a teenager I decided to comb the hair of two sisters. Their mother always looked nice, hair groomed, clothes nice, etc. The 2 little girls always looked like their hair needed grooming.

So I took down the ponytail of the first sister and parted her hair and yuck, it was packed deep with brown flakes, dandruff...:burning:I had never seen anything like this before. I kid you not, it looked like her hair had not been washed in months.

Well, there's a lesson here, ladies: A mother should not look better than her child. A child should look as good if not better. Mom spends lots of time on herself, but little to no time on her child.

That's just effed up! I remember a mom who used to bring her child to school in high water pants and shrunken sweatshirts while she was wearing a floor length mink coat and matching hat. Everyone talked about it.

Somebody need to tell her about herself before DCFS does!!!

That's sad. I've always heard that children should look/act better than the parents. Children are reflection of their parents.

While I hate to see stuff like this there are always two sides to every story.

My mother has spent countless dollars buying nice clothing for my sisters, and I used to spend a lot of time keeping their hair nice and healthy. My mother also spent lots of money decorating their room, while her room was blank with an old bed. But my sisters are very ungrateful...I mean they are children, and sometimes children aren't as quick to take pride in their possessions, especially since they didn't pay for them.

My sisters constantly go outside wearing their school clothing, they get the clothing dirty and eventually wear holes in them.

My youngest sister cut all of her hair off, after seeing some makeover show on TV, and thinking she could imitate the style We've been trying to come up with creative ways to do her hair, but she would rather play beautician herself and mess her hair up everytime.

As for their room, my mother invested so much money into making their room look amazing, while her own room suffered, and once again they are ungrateful. They never want to keep it clean, and have broken or written all over everything in there.

So I told my mother that she should take her hard earned money, and treat herself for a while. Because many times kids are going to be kids. They are no necessarily keen on the superficial society we live in. I mean, we all want to look nice, but sometimes as children we want to play in the dirt without worrying about what others think.

I do see many women who outright neglect their children and only care about their own looks. But there are many mothers out there who struggle to keep their children looking nice only to have that money go to waste. Sometimes the mother deserves to treat herself once in a while, especially since children have yet to learn the values of money and possessions.

Now that the older of my younger sisters is maturing, she is finally wanting to look nice. She's taking a little more pride in her appearance. So we'll finally start back to buying her nice clothing and taking out more time with her hair, etc...

I think many of the examples that you all have provided might be the case of negligent parenting, but this is not always the case.

oh and a side note: the high-water issue is prevalent in my household since my sister is going to be a very tall girl. she is growing like a weed and it's too expensive to constantly buy new pants when she is going to keep growing out of them. plus it's hard to find pants for tall skinny children that don't cost a lot of money.

Honestly, some people either don't know any better and/or care way more about their appearance than they do of their child. I'm going through that right now with my step-daughter. If I don't do her hair - it won't get done at all, because her mother simply does not do it. Case in point, I braid my step daughter's hair once a week. Her mother happened to have her last weekend. When I picked her up from daycare on Monday, her braids had been taken out and her hair was left in a tangled-matted fro and had lint all over it. She allowed her daughter to walk out of the house looking a mess - while she gets her hair done at the hairdresser on a routine basis.
