Why should a person not straighten relaxed hair (i.e. the roots, nape, etc.) with a hot comb when a flat iron produces similar results? If someone were transitioning from relaxed to natural, would he/she be able to use a hot comb or flat iron on the relaxed ends?

My hot comb was one of the reasons my relaxed hair was breaking off and getting shorter before I started my journey. I've never owned a flat iron but I think the sharp, hot narrow teeth of the comb is what was doing it. I didn't use heat protectants either. I thew my hot comb away.
