hey guys. ive been natural for 2 years now. i love my nappy, big hair but im frustrated with the fact that my schedule revolves around my hair when ever i want to change my style or even remove shed hair. right now, i dont change up my style often- its more of a problem with grooming

has anyone been successful with "loosing" their hair? i really dont care about texture- i still want my hair to be BIG and nappy/ kinky but i want to be able to remove my shed hair easier and faster (ie. groom it better and more efficiently). i would also like to be able to switch my styles without having to wet and braid my hair to stretch it OVER NIGHT or wet it, blow dry it to stretch, and then style it... i dont wear twists or braids 24/7 and frankly i dont want to. i dont like them and neither does my hair. i know i would be able to switch my styles more and faster without much frustration if i keep my hair stretched 24/7 but becoming a frequent protective style wearer is out of the question

again, i dont care about the texture (however i dont want to look jacked up!! lol). i dont even care about showing length (im almost at arm pit though). i just want BIG NAPPY LOOKING HAIR that i can groom easily!! lol. my shed hair is the problem. currently, i groom my hair with a boar bristled brush either with detangling cream, condish, or while wet with condish in it to remove the hair without ripping through my hair. i made that change nearly 6 months ago and my hair has thanked me gratiously by retaining length... so im not going to change my grooming method because it works for me. i do this at least 3 times a week but it takes SSOO much time to part my hair and get in there

hence why im looking into getting a texturizer and doing it myself. any suggestions? ive read a few threads about using texturizers with protein conditioners so that the hair doesnt get too straight. have any ex-naturals have success with that?

PM me if yould like. i would REALLY like to hear from you guys and get seasoned advice before i make a rash decision and get it done at the drop of a hat

thanks!

I just Texlaxed a few days ago after about 2 years of being natural, But I didn't have the length you have, But For me I was tired of not being able to change my style, I was tired of looking at the Twa which was my fault because every 7 months I would chop again because it was too long for this and too short for that, But since I have Texlaxed my hair still looks natural but it is softer and my wash n go's have been a breeze, but my husband hasn't even noticed the change LOL!! But you should weigh your options,But in the end you have to deal with your hair so whichever you choose you will still get love and support here!

I don't regret my descision not one bit!:yep:

There's a silkner thread, and towards the end, a member posted pics and described her method which didn't change her texture too much, just made it more "manageable". I'll see if I can find it.

NappyParadise, i know what you mean. ive taken a break from the natural hair site because i wanted to make sure that i wouldnt be easily swayed to stay natural (as in chemical free). i still want nappy big hair but i dont want to chemically treat it to the point where i have sausage sized napps or where it points down. i dont think most of them would understand where im coming from if i even hinted at that... plus it does sound weird... "i want a texturizer so that i can have a big a$$ afro"... LOL. that doesnt make sense, does it!?! lol. but you are right- i have to do what i think is best for me, my life (time is ticking!! lol), and my hair...

redhot, thank you so much for that link. i PMed her

im seriously thinking about getting this done. my coils arent as loose as in her before pictures so theres no telling how this will look on me

any more advice/ suggestions ladies? I NEED IT!

Hello I just texturized my hair with the silk elements texturizer kit it is lye and was designed for shorter hair. The bottles inside the kit were small so I bought two but I only needed one kit. I braided the perimiter of my hair since it is a softer thinner texture than the rest, then braided my hair in the traditional 4 sections and permed one complete side at a time. With care to relax the sides, front and nape last. I watched as my hair loosened up I left it on for 5-8 minutes neutralized and washed one side completely then moved to the next. My hair is now looser textured and my afro is bigger I still could pass for completely natutral though I can still wear twists and puffs. All the texturizer did was loosen the texture it is much easier to comb and style.

If you don't like it you can always transition back, I understand what you mean and it do get frustrated, I used Regular Soft & Beautiful Sensitive Scalp No-Lye Relaxer but I added some shakakai oil that I bought from hairveda.net, But remember to do those edges last or they will go straight, I just applied it all over my hair and gently combed through with a wide tooth comb and I let it sit for 8-10 minutes but you have to watch it so you don't over process and become straight, but I am happy with the results. And I feel you will to!

I texturized mine..The texturizer loosened my curls but as my hair airdries it looks like a big fro but my hair feels lighter and less dense and when I feel my hair I can feel my hands on my scalp which I couldn't do before..my hair is real thick

My hair looks like I relaxed it straight if I blow dry and flat iron

I used the silk elements lye mild relaxer but I may redo it with the cream of nature regular lye relaxer for a few min because the silk elements was so mild that my wash n' go turns into a big afro by the end of the day and that's the style that I was wearing before the texturizer...I want to start rollersetting

I was natural for 1.5 years and texlaxed because I wanted more versatility, and I regret the decision. I don't want to depend on chemicals for the rest of my life, and I really need to learn to live with my hair the way god made it. Because I am a 4z, showing length will take years, so I need to just sit back and be patient.

I'm now transitioning back to natural, so I basically wasted 1.5 years and for what?

how did you texturize your hair? do you regret it because you saw that you would become dependent upon chemicals? did it not come out the way you wanted it to?

i wouldnt say you wasted 1.5 years... you tried something, regretted it, and in turn learned a valuable lesson

I just used Just for Me Texture softerner to correct another texturizer my hair still curly and slightly nappy yet I have the option for shake and go's and straight styles just the way I wanted it. I really like this tex. It moisturizing, easy to apply and cheap. I also like the oil that comes in the kit (you apply it to your hair and the relaxer.) Try it!

bump!!
help me out here, ladies!! (dont worry, i am looking for other threads and subscribing to those too... but there arent too many posts that talk of getting a texturizer and still having nappy hair)

Once you texturize you will no longer be natural and you would have to transisition back.

I think you should try banding. Even with texturized hair you are still going to have a lot of maintenace (sp) for the simple fact you have a lot of hair.

I'll bump this up for you. I know what ur talking about. I've been toying with the idea of texturizing and my niece is gonna do hers in the near future. She wants her same texture jus a little softer and easier to manage, since she is very active. I have also seen people (miko from curve comes to mind) who texturize teir hair lightly and it still has a natural appearance but is jus softened a little so.............

BUMP

@thickhair: i still get the problems with knots. im aware that if i texturize that i will have to transition to become natural again. but i really dont care if im natural or not- just nappy!! lol. and im not saying that i want sausage sized coils. right now, they are about coffee stirrer sized. i want to keep my texture around that size if possible (i think im asking for the impossible here!! lol). i just want to get rid of these dang knots and be able to switch styles easier.

its bad when i have to soak my hair to just move my bunny tail higher or lower on my head. thats ridiculous!! and im not exaggerating either!!

@ kurlee: miko's hair is really cute but its not as nappy as i would want mine to be. i think im going to give myself till xmas to decide and try new grooming techniques (and change up my current techniques ie. with banding) in the mean while...

i really love nappy hair. for me, it isnt about texture or anything. its all about how much my hair controls my time because right now its getting a bit ridiculous!! lol. im going to keep omnipadme's method in mind. i may even just cut a few inches off. who knows :/
