I'm natural and don't moisturize my hair. Started this regimen in 2001. I only ever apply anything to my hair when I need to comb it. Otherwise, once I rinse out conditioner from my braids/twists, I don't add anything else to my hair.

Yes, I saw your post. I recognize that not all natural women moisturize often, just as all relaxed women do not moisturize only on wash day.

I think this is definitely one of those "it just depends on your hair" things. When I was relaxed I had to moisturize twice a day (besides using a leave in when I washed once a week.). I've never needed to do that as a natural. I think my hair isn't very dry naturally, but my relaxer was affecting it.

Except for the really bad winters and during pregnancy I never techinically moisturize. Usually cowashing gets me along just fine I've never had a problem with retaining length excessive dryness or split ends.

Hmmm.. This is interesting!!! I thought moisturizing was something EVERYONE swears by..:look:

Does anyone think it has something to do with the longer your hair is, the healthier it is?!?!

no i have to moisture and i test my hair ever so often to see what it can go without--moisture is just something i need

my hair would snap right off...

I think the longer your hair is, the longer it's been on your head and therefore the longer it's been exposed to the elements and hence to wear and tear, so length doesn't necessarily mean health.

Now if you've got long hair and wear it in protective styles, then it's bound to be healthier than if you left it hanging down. Also if you seal ends in addition to keeping it protected, then you're bound to have healthier hair than if you left it "unprotected" like I do. So I don't really think it has anything to one hair being healthier than the other. I personally just hate the feel of product on my hair. And since I find baggying keeps my hair soft and from feeling dry, I don't see any need to keep smothering it with products. That might explain why my retention isn't so great but *shrug*, it isn't that serious to me. I'd rather feel clean and comfortable than be dripping with oil and looking like a grease monkey, which is what my crazy head thinks would happen if I applied products to my hair.

^^^^:lachen::lachen:the bold part reminds me of a current hair challenge going on.:lachen:

Having stuff on my hair (other than a little grapeseed oil) after it's washed gives me the creeps. I like clean-feeling hair.

BTW, I'm at month 10 into transitioning, so I'm about 50% relaxed, 50% natural.

If I didn't moisturize I'd be back to where my hair was before LHCF, dead and gone.
I swear by moisture. Only conditioner though, I co-wash frequently and don't rinse out the conditioner.

LOL Me too! When I young my mum SLATERED Pink oil moisturizer on my head...my scarves almost turned clear from all the oil :nono:

So now I hate putting stuff on my hair, except when it's wet...that's the exception!

Must use something or I will hear the infamous song from the cereal commercial.

SNAP, CRACKLE AND POP!!!

I noticed I can go longer without moisturizing when I have my hair flat ironed. What in its natural state I need to moisturize it , maybe because I only DC weekly. I don't plan to bother my hair more often than that in the winter, but when I WnG in the summer I co-wash more often.
Mmm I don't know...

i have skipped days but usually daily
sometimes once a day other times twice. it depends how my hair feels

when my hair is straighten though i don't. i use either some oil, butter or serum on my ends and not alot and thats good enough

"moisturize" as in leave-ins oils and such. No, I do not need it. I do like to experiment with them sometimes, but I do not need it. But, I rinse or wash my hair daily and that seems to be enough. I do not need to add anything after words, unless I am wearing my hair out. Then I add something to keep knots from forming.

I'm a natural sista who wears lace wigs often. I MUST keep my hair moisturized or suffer the consequences. :( I use a hair product from Herb N' Life productions called Coconut & Hemp Hair care for hair and scalp. It has shea butter, coconut oil, hemp oil, rosemary, and it smells good enough to eat. :lick:

not me, my hair definitely needs moisture. i used to be hardcore every day sprayer, but now now i can go every other/couple of days, or basically when my hair needs it. a good leave-in helps extend the time between re-moisturizing as well. also when my hair is in yarn braids, i find that they retain moisture a lot better, so i don't have to spray as often.

Not moisturize???? Ha! I laugh at the sentiment!!! :lachen: Not for my hair!!! I must moisturize TWICE a day or it will turn into a fluffball...and not the cute, soft kind!

omg my hair is thirsty as hell. If I go without moisture it will get dry and will get hella crispy after a twist out/braid out.

In fact last night I just made the ULTIMATE hydration cream using kokum butter, olive butter and hemp seed butter :-)

Easily.... And have done so for years, even before I joined the boards. My moisture comes from heavy deep conditioning and my leave ins. I use conditioners that agree with my hair and leave it soft. The only sections of my hair that I add something to is my edges to soften them and lay them down. I also might run some hair cream through my hair when I airdry or my hair is really poofy... but I don't necessarily need to moisturize my ends religiously.. it just makes my fine strands more weighed down. I'm very big on deep conditioning tho, if your hair is thoroughly conditioned then you prob won't need to moisturize as often. There are times I wash my hair and can still feel the moisture and softness from when I last deep conditioned.

I noticed it depends on how I am wearing my hair.

During the brutal winter I kept my hair in a little bun and I was able to go days without moisturizing. That was probably because I applied it to wet hair (when I did I was heavy handed, I just found out realized) and my hair was weighed down and the ends were protected.

Now that I am wearing my hair out and I am applying it to almost dry hair (very lightly) and the wind is whipping it all around I must moisturize every day to every other day.

It also depends on what I am using. I use Jessicurl and Gary Nulls Heavenly hair repair conditioner (it has wheat protein) exclusively. The Daily Aloeba is light so that has to go on every day but the Too Shea is heavy so I use it every other day. The Gary Nulls is only applied 2x a week.

I tried moisturizing every couple of days while wearing my hair out and my hair started tangling up in the back. I wound up having to take my split ender to it and take off 1/4 inch. This could have also been beause I have layers and was not applying in sections like I did during the dead of winter so all strands where not getting there fair share.

@ the bolded-same here. I wet my hair daily in the shower (wash, cowash, or just plain water) and that's my moisturizer. I do however use Sabino to seal in the moisture from my wash but that's it. I don't consider pure cones a moisturizer. I gave up on leave ins and stop using them a month ago. So far this is working out so much better. I have spent so much money on daily moisturizers and none of them can leave my hair half as moisturized as plain old water. Seems to me that as the people with the driest type of hair WE should be the ones wetting it daily.

I tried not moisturizing for awhile:nono: and my hair broke off ALOT!!!!!!:wallbash: The second I started back on MOISTURIZING I noticed a huge difference, my hair seemed much more healthier and less likely to shed as much as well

I find that as the health of my hair improves I need less & less product...there are times when my hair thrives on a water/oil regi only

I have to moisturize my hair at least once a day or my hair would feel like straw. My hair loves some scurl(the juice).:grin:
