I am sure this occurs, but I guess it was very strange for me to actually see it, but I was on a friend of a friend's facebook page looking at pictures and saw this old college classmate. She has identical twin girls who look to be about 2 years old.

There were quite a few pictures of them and in every one of them, they had their hair in a high ponytail. One of the little girls hair was more like a huge ponytail puff and the other little girl's hair looked to be slicked back and in a high thin ponytail; both heads of hair were really beautiful. The first thought that came to my mind was "why in the heck would she put a relaxer in that child's hair?!?!?!?!?!". Then I saw a picture of the little girls with their hair down. The one that I thought had a relaxer??? Well she has huge shiny curly locks of hair and when it's pulled back, it looks very straight. I was shocked because I just didn't realize that although they are identical, their hair types could be very different.

(I have never seen the mom's natural hair but I saw a pic of the paternal grandmother's hair and she is natural; it's much like the curly locks of the little one so I guess that gene was passed down to her)

I know that was probably a stupid observation, but I was sooo glad when I realized that she hadn't put a relaxer in the baby's hair! Now the nosy part of me often wonders if she or other people show favoritism to the child with the looser texture hair and if it will causes problems for her in her future.:ohwell:

Are you sure they're identical? Mary Kate and Ashley Oleson are supposed to be fraternal twins, but they look just alike.

Anyway, that's interesting if they are.

That's my question - growing up I babysat twin boys that looked identical but were actually fraternal twins. That is interesting though if they are identical.

Maybe they are not identical, there are plenty of fraternal twins that still look the same.

Everyone has the same thought as me, I see. They are not likely identical. Identical means just that......identical. However, there are A LOT of fraternal twins that look so much the same they claim they are identical. Like, and here is my little personal rant, it drives me nuts that Zack and Cody from the Disney Channel claim that they are identical. They looked very much alike when they were younger but now that they are older there is a crystal clear difference in their looks.

Anyway, all of that was to say, they're probably not identical. Don't mind me...:drunk:

I'm a fraternal twin, my bro has different hair but then again he is different in a lot of ways. LOL

If they have different hair types naturally, then they are fraternal and just look very much alike.

agreed with all that's said. And I have two daughters with different hair types. One is like mine and the other is more 4 type. One is fair and the other is dark brown. I definitely show no favoritism. They are both my princesses. I notice that others have smart alec things to say and I check them right away. I make sure both my girls know that they are beautiful.

I'm sure they do have something to say. ugh. :nono: I'm glad you are protecting your girls from that as well as you can
By the way, how do you find caring for type 4 hair in general? Just curious.

Op, I'm sure the same thing will happen with the twins you are talking about.

The bolded was just funny to me:grin:. I just assumed that they were identical (they are young so they still look very similar to me) but just as you and other posters mentioned, they are probably fraternal.

That was the "random thinking" coming out in me. It appeared that they look so much alike (and if they're fraternal I'm sure as they get older, their difference in appearances will become more obvious) and I guess I just couldn't get past the fact that I thought the woman had put a relaxer in the baby's hair.

I'm not sure as the mother hasn't told me personally. I only just saw the pictures and made that assumption and just like Mary Kate and Ashley, they could probably just look very much alike. They are still young (2) so I am sure as they get older, the differences in appearance will become more apparent.

I'm like you; I was thinking that it was pretty interesting if identical twins would have different hair types, but I didn't think about the fact that "identical" means "identical". (in every aspect)

I am learning. I'm not there yet. That's part of the reason I became more active on this site (esp. the child hair section)! She was bald for a long time and now it's all come in. It's fine and super curly. I am doing my research and learning from the fabulous 4s on here. If it's up to me, she will have a beautiful head of coily hair.

identical means identical in every aspect.
because the egg that is making the babies (LOL...I'm so technically) splits in half and makes copies. tho they can be identical or mirror image identical twins.

but sometimes when babies are young, they look so much alike, everyone thinks they are identical (including doctors). I saw an episode of Maury where these twins thought they were fraternal (they looked exactly alike tho) but they were really identical so they couldn't determine who was the dad (paternity test).
it just happens that way sometimes.

random. lol.

wow, I hope you're enjoying the journey. I'm sure she will have a beautiful head of coily hair. My mom has a significantly looser texture than me, and she got me and my sister to beyond waistlength as children and I have type 4 hair, my sister's texture's looser I think. I'm sure you can do the same with your daughter. :yep:

Yeah that would be shocking, and why just one baby and not the other? lol
I'm glad to know it's not a relaxer though :yep:

I'm a fraternal twin and my sis and i kinda look alike. Her hair is 10 times thicker than mine hahaha but I guess that is to be expected since we are fraternal

OP- could you let us know if you find out please? That would be really interesting if they are identical.

No, they can not be identical. Check about two or 3 posts above you. She beat me to it. Even her example was what I was going to say.

The DNA for identical twins is exactly the same.

I didn't know they were saying that,. One of them has a chunkier face and you can easily tell the difference between the two of them.

Thanks trevprit. I disagree though. Identical twins inherit the same DNA at first but changes during development both before and after birth can lead to genetic differences. I think these differences (and the extent of them) are still being understood. It could be very rare- that's what makes it potentially interesting to me. :)

ITA with all the above ladies comments. They're not identical because then they would share 100% of genes. Fraternal twins can share upwards of 50% of their genes though, making them look SO alike!
Wow!
