Tuck them under the mattress when sleeping. Or wrap then around a pillow and sleep on them.

We talked about it last night and he doesn't tie it up when he sleeps since he can't move his head comfortably. The way he was tying it up years ago was sort of like a low bun. His neck would ache and he just stopped tying up his hair.
My hair has never been that long and thick so I've never experienced neck pain due to my hair.
