problem #1: my hair has a coated feeling when you touch it. i noticed it after i washed it (with regular shampoo.) it feels coated the way it does after i apply avocado butter to damp hair.

problem #2: it's also not allowing anything to penetrate! conditioner doesn't go on the same. it's as if condish is sitting on top of the a hair. i have to use a ton of it and it won't smooth down the shaft! and when i apply condish, it doesn't feel soft like it used to. its kinda soft when i rinse it, but not like it was before.

problem #3: my hair doesn't have the shine it used to.

does anyone have any idea what could possibly be going on with my hair??

possible culprits: when it was flat-ironed, i was moisturizing with Neutrogena Triple Moisture leave-in & sealing with an oil mix (jojoba, avocado & sweet almond oils.) could the silicone in NTM have coated the hair? when i first noticed this problem last week, i washed with clarifying shampoo hoping for my hair to feel soft again.

since then i've been using avocado butter after washing and conditioning. i apply the avocado butter on damp hair hoping to add extra moisture (but it doesn't "feel" good or smooth on damp hair.) also, during the week, if my hair feels a little dry (wearing a wash-n-go stretching them 3 days or more) i'll smooth some avocado butter onto my dry hair. feels fine, goes on nice, feels like its penetrating...

so, does anyone have any idea what could possibly be going on? or how i can fix my hair. i want conditioner to penetrate and want my hair feel soft!! not coated. please help!!!

You may have product build-up. First try a clarifying shampoo to remove the buildup. If that doesn't work try a chelating shampoo to remove any mineral deposits that hair can get from hard water. HTH.

i tried clarifying shampoo last wk. maybe it wasn't a good one. i might wash again mid-week, if so i'll try another. i don't know where any mineral deposits could've come from on my hair. very frustrating. thanks for recommending chelating shampoo - any specific brands you know of?

Mineral deposits could come from hard water. I have used Design Essential clarifying shampoo. It stripped my hair completely.

Stripping the hair might be exactly what I need...as long as the conditioner starts penetrating afterward. Might be getting some Design Essential Shampoo. thank you.

okay...I'll check out Joico Chelating if my hair isn't feeling better by the weekend. thanks!
:hug3:

Joico chelating is great.

I use ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo. It removes build-up while gently cleans.

i had the same problem and used nexxus aloe rid. i hate that it has sls but it worked. what shampoo did you use to clarify?

portico clarifying shampoo - from the hotel i'm staying in. i like nexxus products and they're easy to find. i just want my hair to be normal again. it sounds like everyone thinks it just product build-up.

I third this shampoo i tried it this weekend and it did not strip my hair it felt soft and clean. I use avocado butter sometimes also and i find when i use it often i will get a coated feeling also. like a little waxy. Try using a little less than what you usually use and see if that helps.

You could also use baking soda to clarify. I used it on my hair the other day and it worked pretty well, I actually used it twice so the second rinse left my hair a little to clean and a little dry, but I would definitely recommend doing it once. I just mixed 1tbsp baking with 2 cups of water. Wet my hair in the shower then poured the mixture slowly over my head, scrubbing my scalp a little bit like I would with shampoo then rinsed. My sitrinillah d/c seemed to work a little better than usual, I'm pretty sure I had a lot of product buildup. HTH

Once you clarify, try steaming your hair while you DC. Your hair will love it. If you don't have a steamer see the thread about homemade steam treatments.

i was thinking avocado butter could be the culpit! without wanting to call it out cuz i know how many people use it successfully...and i am heavy handed when it comes to moisturizer/anything conditioning! maybe i try to go less avocado butter. and def add this ORS Creamy Aloe shampoo since 3 people love it - that or Nexxus Aloe Rid since they got the most votes. thanks for the info - and avocado butter advice.

(if it feels coated, though, does that mean its protecting my ends from splits since its so moisturized??)

It may be that your clarifying shampoo was not as potent as you need. I have found out that there are some weaker clarifying shampoos out there. They have their time and place in a hair regimen, but not when you have serious build up.

You could be right about the silicone from the NTM. I have also found that butters can/do build up on hair--shea butter in my personal experience caused me major problems.

Hi wyldcurlz, avocado butter is a good butter, you don't need alot. Your ends can be protected without feeling coated. For me when my hair feels coated that means its getting heavy on my hair. I am a fine 4a and i can't use it everyday. Try alternating your butter with a lighter moisturizer and see if it helps. Im sorry i don't know a whole lot about hair. You can even put avocado butter in the search engine to find different threads about it and how other ladies are using it. I hope this is helpful to you.

Supergirl - what kind of problems did Shea Butter build-up cause you? i was wondering what negative effects build-up could have other than making the hair look dull. please let me know.

I like ORS Creamy Aloe. I usually dilute it with some water in a tipped applicator bottle, that way I get it on my scalp only, and the rest of my hair gets clean with the run off. It's been working for me, and we have hard water over where I live. HTH

When my hair starts feeling coated I use Apple Cider Vinegar straight out of the bottle. I wet my hair, pour the ACV onto my hair, gently work it through my hair, then shampoo and deep condition like usual.

You need to clarify your hair. So select a good clarifying shampoo that won't strip your hair too much and be on your merry way. Don't forget to clarify once a month.
