Soooo...I made my own clip-in extensions

I love clip in extensions. You can create any style.

I'm going to use them to make a bun since my hair isn't quite long enough, this weekend. And my sister made her clip ins about an hour ago. I'll put picture in my fotki, so you can see the fruits of your labor - so to speak!

I had no idea I was going to get this kind of response. I can't wait to see your sister's JLove!!!! They were easy for her to do right??!! I just love them. I never thought I would ever be so excited about weaves!! It makes me feel good that I can just go in a store and get whatever hair I want and make my own weave; AND not have to rely on a hairdresser to do it. I'm glad that I hated the way the instant weave looked on me because I actually did this out of desparation (since my son's graduation was the next day and I didn't know what I was going to do with my hair).

I am going to experiment with streaks too. I am going to get some blond this week and try it out. A good thing to do is to make several pieces of each width so that you can change up your styles easier without having to re-measure and sew the clip-ins. But they are sooooo easy to do, that it really doesn't matter either way.

The bun is going to look really nice!! I hope you post pictures of it. I am going to do one for work tomorrow.

The only thing we need to work on is where to get quality clips in bulk. I used 15 on my set alone which was 5 packs. People are selling 12 for $10 on eBay and that's not a deal because Sally's sells them for less. If anyone finds out anything please post info because I can't find anything.

That should be enough for a half set. You could do one full-width weft (3), two mid-width wefts (4), and three one-inch wefts to put around the front (3) or two full-width wefts (6), two mid-width wefts (4) ... girl you have plenty of clips to start with.

Yeah girl ... I gotta use this digital camera for something useful . I'm just glad that everyone is finding it helpful. I love helping my sisters!!

Because this was my first time and I am normally not too good with "hair suff", you know? I went with cheaper hair...$7.99 and I got the 12" which looks longer than that in the "Natural Yaki Straight", Color #2.

Now, I'm just using my little half-raggedy web cam to take pics with so....they are not the best, but I think they are good enough for you to get the idea.

Please see thumbnails. The first one is my "before" and the other two are with my WEAVE!!

Also, I'd like to add, out of all my years of being on this forum, this is one of the most useful things I have learned. This is awesome.

I'm sure it will look great. I have use clips in weave to create low ponytails. It is more natural than a sew in.

Well I cant believe what Im reading. I laughed out loud. I have been doing the clip ins for years. No one can ever tell. Its a great way to add length.

But I must warn you...there are some drawbacks if you are not careful. Sallys arent the greatest clips to use. They are very weak. Secondly if you try to comb your hair too much, the clips will tear your hair out. This tends to happen because of cheap BSS hair. You will try to go after a snag and thats it...instant ballspot(and pain). Lastly, temporary wear is fine. If you want the look all the time as an alternative to weaves or braids...you must take the clips out at least every other day. It only takes 2 minutes to take out.


And one more tip...if you can, braid your hair underneath...That was when I saw th e most growth.

I LOVE IT Kimberly!! And that's with $7.99 hair!! It was easy right!!?? I just went out and bought some more snap clips from Sally because I need to make some 4-inch pieces (the Sally's near my job had a stash of them.

I'm glad you found it useful. That's why I love this site so much because most of the things that I learned on here are things that I would have never seeked out.

If you know any weave pros could you ask them what hair lasts for a long time that will be similar to our texture? I'm sure there is something on here about it though, so I will do a search and post it for us 'weave newbies'.

I sure wish I wasn't tenderheaded because I would have my niece cornrow my hair; but I'm happy with the plaits especially with over 2 years of new growth -- cornrowing would probably produce alot of breakage unless I flat ironed my hair first.

I used one pack and I had a lot of hair left. But I was talking to my sister today and she said that it depends on the hair that you get. She said that there is more hair in discount store hair than the more expensive hair (but she couldn't even tell me which hair what good that lasted a long time so it wasn't all that helpful).

@ mica -- Since you are a pro at this , if you would like to share any other helpful tips like what kind of hair you use/what kind to stay away from, etc. I'm sure we would all appreciate it. Also, you mentioned that Sally's clips are not good quality ... sooooo what kinds are?; and where would we get them? TIA

Also, as I did in the video, I brushed the hair while holding down on the top of the weft so I didn't experience any tugging but that is good information to know.

I sure wish I had a scalp of steel. The sight of a comb scares me (well if someone else combs it).

Oh....I luv you girl....You have set a new standard with these clip-in's! I am in transistion right now and have about 3 1'2 inches of relaxed hair still on my ends (I know...I'm holding on to them for dear life ) Anyways, I purchased hair (wet & wavy, tangle free...it's great) and the wig clips from the BSS. I followed your suggestions and placed them in...I just wanted a pony-tail, and it worked like a charm. It really looks beautiful. I'm so pleased. The hair looks like it's coming right out my scalp. This is certainly going to be something that I do all summer, until my hair gets to the length I want it to be and then do the big cut!

I'll have to take some pics to let you all see, but once I master it...it's going to be beautiful...i'm so excited. All I can say to you is THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! YOU ARE THE BEST!!!

It looks soooooooooooo natural. Good job! I think I'm going to switch to this instead of my instant weaves (when I want to wear them). Since I can choose the hair and the style. That's one of things I don't like about my quickweave, I hate the texture of the hair...it's too silky in my opinion. I can wait to get my hair out of these braids. I'm planning on doing a sew-in weave when I take them out...but I do need a short break in between and this would be great.

I am soooo glad that it worked out for you!!! I can't wait to see the pics. I actually put two of the tracks in today for a side ponytail. It took me 1 minute to put them in ... that's it. It's so convenient and much more natural looking than the instant weaves ... OH and cheaper!!!

Thank you!! I think you were one of the ones that sparked my interest in Instant Weaves (can't do a search right now cause it ain't working) so THANK YOU!!! If it weren't for the thread about instant weaves I would have never found out about the clip ins.

Yeah, I couldn't go out with the instant weave that I bought. I couldn't even get my hair to cover the hump from the front of it and the hair just didn't match. Plus, I like wearing my hair with a part in the middle and I couldn't with that.

Oooooo girl ... that bun is fierce!! I am doing that next week!!! How do you get it so uniform though??

This is so convenient and I can change it up however I want it. Yesterday I had one track in ... today I put two in ... and it takes less than a minute to put them in ... can't get no better than that (IMHO). This weekend, I'm going to Great Escape and I'm going to be rocking the same about of tracks that I had in in the picture but I am going to wear a scarf. Hmmm ... I think I'm going to add some blonde in there too.

Sooo I finally got a chance to watch the videos. LiLi you went above and beyond with those videos. EXCELLENT narration, just FANTASTIC!

If I can get this look right, I may give up the instant weave, since I know I can get a better texture match with other hair and have a less bulky look.

I have a question for you. In the first pic on this thread you said that you only had out the crown and the rest of your hair was braided underneath. How many tracks did you use?

To answer your question about my bun. I only used maybe 3-4 tracks with my own hair left out (tracks just placed within my hair). I then gathered in a low ponytail and then twisted the ponytail into the bun. I used bobby pins to secure. It's easy takes maybe 5-7 minutes once you have it down and know where you need to place the tracks to achieve the look.

It's so funny that I didn't think about using them for a full head weave like you did. Learn something new everyday is my motto!

Yeah, so I haven't been on the site for a while trying not to be totally neurotic about my hair. My hair progress is going well but while watching HSN, I saw Toni Brattin Hair clip-in extensions. I purchased several types to try them out between $35-60 including shipping. They looked okay but not perfect and I was concerned about the texture since it's synthetic hair.

Thennnnnnnnnnnnnnn I read this. So I took my butt to Sally's and for less than freaking $10, I have enough to make for my mom and myself plus I have hair left over to make my puppy one if she wants one.

It looks absolutely perfect. I only need half sections since my hair is so jacked up on the left side. I can customize them for my thin areas. I love it and it's CHEEEEEAAAAPPPP!!!!
