Hey everyone,

I wanted to start a thread for those who wear sew ins and extensions (K Tips, etc) as a protective style. Any good protective style comes with maintaining the hair underneath it for health. Also, keeping the extensions healthy makes them last a long time as well. Any product recommendations, tips in keeping the leave out healthy without damaging the hair, and care guides are welcome.

Great shampoo and conditioners for extensions. I have used them in the past with success:

For extension hair:
1. EverPure Shampoo and Conditioner
2. EverCreme Shampoo and Conditioner
3. Innersense Hydrating Cream Hairbath
4. Creme of Nature Argan Oil Sulfate-Free Moisture and Shine Shampoo
5. Creme of Nature Argan Oil Intensive Conditioning Treatment

I haven't tried it, but I heard Ouai Detox clarifying can be used on extension hair.

I wash my hair in a downward motion to prevent tangling rather than gathering them up all together.

On my real hair, I dilute the shampoo for my hair. I like to use Creme of Nature shampoo, but if I condition my hair, I like to opt for something lightweight and won't cause build up. I would use the Trader Joe's Tea Tree conditioner diluted as a conditioner and let it sit for a few minutes then I will rinse it. I sit underneath the dryer for an 1hr or so and apply my leave in conditioning spray afterwards. Taliah Waajid makes great braid and protective style hair products from the leave in sprays to the shampoo to use on your real hair. African Pride has some products as well.

For a leave out, maybe some people can chime in on it. I know taking care of a leave out from a sew-in can be challenging to a lot of people if they wear their hair straight in a sew-in. Looking for products design for smoothing and anti-frizz including shampoo and conditioner can help with some of the issues. Of course a heat protection is a most. Silicone is not the enemy especially if you are straightening a leave out. I am not an anti-silicone person. It has more benefits than cons. Anything can leave build up on the hair including heavy moisturizers, oils, and butters. I think these products leave more build up than silicones to be honest. Also, I know it's a bad idea to flat iron on dirty hair.
