I'm going to be on Youtube later trying to find this episode!!!
I want to see what the woman with the locs (she's from Napturality) has to say

who the hell is putting weave in 8yr old hair!! really!???! get this ish together. i cant go.

I used to take care of a baby a few years ago and the mom (African) used to put a weave in the little girl's hair before she turned 1. Talk about traumatic!

how can people weave or relax a child's hair? Don't they deserve a choice at a time when they are able to think for themselves?

Geesh don't know if I want to watch it. I don't like to see children in pain.

I've heard it before. We call it the white girl flip or swang. I've even seen it in posts on this board. I don't think these are the most ignorant or extreme perspectives because they are synonymous with black moms/children I know but you're right it's not the be all and end all.

Most of us relax our hair because we think it's bad or nappy, because it's hard to comb and unmanagable, because it's dry and short and damaged and doesn't grow, etc. I could go on down the line. This is nothing new to all of us. However, I think given the climate of this board and the fact that this is a board dedicated to hair care and growing healthy hair we're going to look at these people like WTF?!?!?! because we've been enlightened. We know better. Some of us shared those same thoughts and ideas these women did before coming here. That's just like the whole thing with militant naturals ragging on "permies". It makes me want to go WTF?!?! Didn't you use to perm your hair? Now you want to be all high and mighty?!?!

I think the biggest issue is education. Many of us do not know how to take care of of hair natural or relaxed. It is something that has to be learned. And until you learn what to do, you're going to do what you know even if it is bad because that's what you were taught. Think about some people whose hair has stayed the same length their whole life? Obviously they aren't doing something right. Hair definitely grows. You wouldn't need a touch up if it didn't.

I completely agree with the two bolded statements. However, people have to be open to education & some people aren't. My mother is a good example of this. She is wholly caught up in this "black people, white people hair products" syndrome. She & my brother came over for Mother's Day. I took her to the Target in my neighborhood b/c she wanted to see it. First, I took her to the section w/ the skin & hair products that contain natural ingredients. I was showing her the Giovanni & Alba & Kiss My Face products. Above the products was a picture of a woman who looked like Salma Hayek when she played Frida Kahlo. She pointed to the woman & said, "Look at the picture. These are those products for white people. This isn't for black people's hair." I tried to explain to her that there's no such thing as white people products & black people products, but, of course, she wouldn't listen.

Then we went to the regular hair care section. First, we stopped in front of the Umberto Beverly Hills, Bumble & Bumble, and Matrix Biolage products. I asked her what type of products those were. She said that they were white people products. I asked her why she said that & she said that she could just look at them & tell. Then we walked down to the other end of the aisle where there were Dr. Miracle's, Soft Sheen Carson, and Africa's Best products. When I asked her what types of products those were, she started nodding her head & said, "Yes, those are our products." I asked her why & once again she said that she could just look at them & tell. Finally, I took her to the other hair care aisle, where there were Pantene, Garnier Fructis, Dove, Herbal Essences, Tresseme, and Suave products. She said that those were a mixture products. "Some of them are for them, but some of them can also be used for us," she said.

I was just too through at that point. The whole time, she was talking about how the products (everything but the Suave & Dove products) were too expensive. She even said that the Aphogee 2-min Keratin Reconstructor, which is $4.49 for an 8 oz. bottle in my neigborhood, is too expensive. Meanwhile, this is the same woman who buys $100 wigs.

Okay at that mom relaxing her 3 you hair...First of all she doesn't know what the heck she is doing!!! Overlapping her relaxer:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:!!! WTH!!!

For a 5 year old that girl has a TON of hair...I can understand that she would get teased too, it's so sad either way you look at it!

Serenity now! Goodness this show is a hot mess of ignorance!

I agree, that's why I don't watch her show. I don't know what happened on the show, but Tyra is one of the most ignorant women of color in media.

I expect nothing better from her show. With all of her money if she didn't have time to read a book she could have paid someone to read one or do some research for her.

As far as these so-called mothers are concerned, some people should just not have children.

Aww for those little girls...so sad
Poor little 5 yo says they say she smells like boo-boo because her hair is long...
Then the 8 yo with the weave who mother makes her wear a weave/relaxer..
The 3 yo with overprocessed relaxed hair, crying because her scalp was burning....
5 yo who hates her hair....so, so, so, so, sad!!!!

However, I can relate to their pain especially growing up in the 80's (when light skin/curly hair was in due to Al B. Sure:grin:)-LOL My mother never tolerated that good hair/bad hair growing up. But I sure did get my share of it from neighborhood kids, school, etc...

I honestly do not see what the purpose of this show is, and what message it is sending when today Tyra is in braids (have no idea what the significance is), and tomorrow she will be decked out in her lacefront again and never wore her natural hair not even once. What hypocrisy. I am truly perplexed. I do believe, deep inside, Tyra is one of those little girls.

My thoughts exactly...the LF will be on tomorrow!!

My stylist said the following: "As far as hair products for African Americans are concerned, all they do is create a "white product" and add a few more ingredients to make it comparable to African American hair."

Years ago, the president at Verifen Complex told me the following: "We set aside an existing product and added more oil to it." Now, I would like to know what is the "original existing product." He also told me the name of the company that manufactures it. I've not been able to find it yet. :wallbash: I think he was just throwing me off . . . because no one will tell their secrets, because they know they will lose money. I just want to save some money by throwing in my own oil :superbanana: -- if that's the case, but he did tell me that they were going to add more herbs and vitamins.

I'm watching this cow relax her 3 yo dd's hair. I'm getting sooo angry! She's raking through this girls head with a rattail comb!! OMG! She got relaxer in her eye! I can't believe she relaxed from root to tip :wallbash: This is bringing back too many childhood memories

She's talkin about the "kitchen" on her edges, that girls hair around her edges is very fine and disentigrating from being overprocessed! Grrr!

I think the little girl with "nappy" hair is the cutest and has the prettiest, thickest hair :ohwell: Did anyone see her pic with the afro? It looked so soft. I completely blame her mom for this "good hair, bad hair" thing. My kids have never even heard the term and never will, if I have anything to do with it.
This show is so sad. I make a point to tell my girls every single day how beautiful their curly hair is
I can't believe that white mom puts weave in her daughters head. I'm just SMH at this whole episode and at Tyra for making such a big fuss over natural hair, but never showing her own.
She gets on my nerves with wearing them damn cornrows every time she starts preaching about natural hair. I don't think she's even natural

I found this show to be sad. :nono: Our hair is unique and beautiful no matter how we decide to wear it. I grew up with the "good hair, bad hair" thing. I use to wonder why my hair didn't look like everyone else. I didn't know at the time that black hair has the most diversity, the most bounce, the most ways to style. I feel that I am blessed. I can have an afro, a sleek bob, I can make it stand on end without hairspray, I can have braids, and sew ins, twists, dreads and anything my heart desires. :yep:

There is nothing wrong with black hair. Those girls felt the way they did because that is what their misinformed mothers had been telling them. :spinning: Relaxers are not a cure for "bad" hair. They don't change anything. Our hair is beautiful period. I don't feel that the opinions expressed on that show represented by some of the guests represented how most black women feel about their hair. I don't know, I could be wrong but I don't think so.

I thought it was a good show. It was sad especially with the children. The show makes me want to take out my sewn in and showcase my natural hair.

WOW WOW WOW SHE PERMS A THREE YEAR OLDS HAIR :angry2:!!!!!!!!!and from root to tip not just the new growth:wallbash:

Somebody posted this on Tyra's Website and I could not agree more...........

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO BLACK PEOPLE AND I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU GOT YOUR OWN SHOW! ALL YOU DO IS TRY TO EXPLOIT BLACKS BY PICKING THE MOST STUPID PEOPLE YOU CAN FIND TO SAY THE MOST RIDICULOUS THINGS ON TV--ALL THE WHILE YOU'RE LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK. EVERYONE KNOWS NATURAL HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL. WE'VE ALL SEEN VERY ATTRACTIVE "NATURAL" SISTAS SPORTING THEIR TRESSES. BUT, YOU WOULD HAVE ALL AMERICA BELIEVE WE WANT TO LOOK WHITE AND THAT'S JUST NOT TRUE. BY THE WAY, I'VE NEVER TOOK A SURVEY WHEN I'VE PURCHASED HAIR PRODUCTS....SO, HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY BLACKS SPEND. A LOT OF PRODUCTS THAT ARE DESIGNED FOR & TARGETED FOR BLACKS ARE PURCHASED BY WOMEN OF OTHER RACES WHO HAVE CURLY OR KINKY HAIR. YOU'RE A DISGRACE AND SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF. YOU'RE A BLACK JERRY SPRINGER--HOW PATHETIC!

Omg this show is disturbing and I wanted to slap some sense into the girl in the yellow top that said her hair had "white girl flow" from atlanta! had the nerve to say she has the BEST hair in ATLANTA!! wtf and then to agree with the mom that relaxes her daughters hair at 3 years old! omg these women are lacking soo much common sense and EDUCATION! i bet you if they say an article that related these specific relaxers to cancer and baldness and certain death ugh SO FRUSTRATING!!!!

oh i wish i could see this show, but i live in the uk. they showed her first season here then that was it. guess the uk no likey tyras show! i hope the episode pops up on youtube!

First, I do not like Tyra's talk show to begin with, but I am watching this show right now and these women are so uneducated and selfish when it comes to their children. I don't think that this or any of Tyra's shows are informative, she just wants a topic to talk about but she doesn't educate or inform black women of the alternatives to relaxing. Obviously the information is out there or this website would not be here. I just think that Trya didn't have enough people that have natural hair to show if you take care of your hair what it will look like. There are plenty of people that have natural hair that straighten there hair or have it curly an it looks beautiful! I don't think Tyra had a full representation of black hair she just focused on "bad hair".

I think the biggest problem with this hair thing is denial and the need to be RE-educated.

Yea, like she didn't even let the lady with locs go in properly on the other chick. Just because she has dreads she doesn't wash her hair? They sounded so misinformed and uneducated! I think it's sad and I'm tired of shows that make us look so insecure like she shouldve had both sides. Like a natural mother her natural child all that. I mean the mom with the hannah Montana daughter is clearly going to relax her hair soon since she claims her daughter is too young, what she shouldve said is that my child doesn't need it now or ever.
