Do u ever feel awkward shopping in the non-enthic aisle at the grocery store?

I see plenty of white women, mexican men and women in the ethic section of Walmart all the time checking out the hair and skin products.
There no strange looks when blacks browse the non ethic section.

^^^^Now this is the place that I get the sideeye from folks. That just makes me puff my chest out bigger and start asking for rosewater, amla, hibiscus, and other powders.

Nah, not in the mainstream grocery stores or drug stores, I've never noticed anyone looking at me funny. However, when I go to the local Indian Grocery Store the patrons look at me a little longer, but no ice grills or mean muggin'.

I more awkward shopping with people I know instead of if there was a strange there. the strangers usually keep it moving or give compliments (maybe it's a NY thing?). my friends tend to be loud asking a million questions about the product in my hand and why I don't shop in the ethnic section.

Although I'm not ashamed to shop the non-ethnic aisle, I sometimes get a weird look for the person helping. They look at my hair, then down at the bottle, then up at my hair again. I know what they're thinking....

^^^^^^ this is what usually happens to me.... I've heard teeth sucking from YT ladies when i'm browsing through the "non ethnic" stuff too. But most of what I get comes from us . Side eyes, chicks picking up every product I look at. I had a whole convo with a cashier one night about Aussie and if it works for our hair because it's a "white product" ..I don't feel ackward about it at all.... I honestly only go to I guess the "ethnic" section when I know there is something specifically I need. Other then that ...I'm browsing else where...

This is actually funny to me...when I got the CON shampoo from my BSS the man who checked me out was Indian. And he said to me, "Oh, this is a really good shampoo. I use this and the conditioner and..." and he gives me this look like oooh my hair is on it! I didn't want to give him a side eye I was just like, "Cool!!" and was more excited to try it. He had nice hair - it was cut short but it was voluminous and shiny without being covered in product.

I can hear these girls now, "You aren't white," as I walk down the aisle in Target. But, that's normally the girls with busted, disgusted and not to be trusted hair. So....

Texas... They treat certain people down here differently then others when it come to customer services. Other then that it not super racist and people get a long. It just some people give weird looks when you a super nice store.

I've had a different experience. Grew up in Texas, live here now...no problems. I shop at Whole Foods, Target, Central Market, Aveda, the Indian Market, the Mexican Taquerias, the farmer's markets and everywhere else.

IDK, but I've always purchased stuff like John Frieda, Herbal Essences, and Oscar Blandi for my hair, long before I started growing it out. I had no idea people felt "limited" to the ethnic aisle. I never felt limited...maybe that's why that aisle doesn't bother me. When I go to Sephora, they don't automatically point me to Carol's Daughter erplexed.

I never understood the ethnic hair care aisle. It is geared toward Black women (& men), but doesn't everyone have ethnicity??? Why is ethnic associated w/just Black people? LoL

Because in general our hair is the most unique.

I never feel awkward. Other ppl sometimes look at me but they usually try to see what I'm getting. One girl even asked me what hairspray she should buy. I will buy my herbal essences and feel no ways about it...

Yea I do I've gotten a couple of strange looks. TBH, I look at white folks/non black folk strange when they go to the ethnic hair aisles because I expect them to think, "eww I don't need to use these BLACK products!" when in reality more of them need to invest in some Africa's Best Hair Mayonnaise and CON shampoo to fix their dry, stringy hair, especially those with dyed/bleached hair. Have you ever noticed that most white women with platinum blonde hair are bald headed/have damaged, short hair?

this was me! lawdy when we went to the walgreens near us i was sooo surprised! they had the shea moisture stuff i wanted, PLUS that new CON shampoo folks were raving about her, AND this new line of olive oil stuff only sold at walgreens. i mean SO walked away and came back at one point with a basket cause he just knew that i was fittin ta clear some shelves right quick

all the while trying to juggle jars in my arms and snap pictures with my blackberry for future reference.

I guess California really is different from the rest of the US. In most stores Black hair products are merged with the other ones so no one notices or cares. And even when they're separate, I don't feel weird and no one's looked sideways at me.

The only thing I ever pick up from the ethnic aisle is S Curl, and I don't use it much since I prefer bare hair about 98% of the time so whenever I go shopping for hair products, I beeline for the non-ethnic aisle and don't even give this a second thought.

I think I'm too self-absorbed to notice what others are doing when I'm out and about. Most times I don't even recognize acquaintances until they yell my name or tap me on the shoulder as I am about to obliviously walk by them looking straight past them. So I most certainly wouldn't notice strangers, let alone their facial expressions or gazes.

Whenever I experience instances of someone "watching" me, I turn to them, look 'em straight in the eye and politely say, "Can I help you?" Man, you talk about awkward?! People don't expect you to do that. People usually ignore them or shoot them an evil glare and not SAY anything. :yup: Either they'll turn away and pretend they didn't just get embarrassed, or they'll ask me a question about what I'm looking at or whatever. And that's fine. I do that everywhere, not just in the hair care section of any establishment.

I know I'm a rare beautiful bird and people are going to look, wonder or concern themselves with what I'm doing.
